Developing as the season goes along would be my guess. Last thing the Cards need to do is add over the hill anchors like the Carpenter/Crawford reference above.
OT a little, but on the Illini BB team the leader is said to be Jake Davis, the 6th or 7th man on the team. He is said to not hesitate to get in another players face if need be, while also being there to listen, coach, support, etc., while not being outworked on his own game by anyone.

Loudest voices doesn't refer to volume rather a voice of leadership.

What I find interesting, is that a couple of years ago, this was an issue of concern. You had, supposedly, both, Arenado and Goldschmidt asking the club to bring in somebody to help out in this area. The club resigned Matt Carpenter and Brandon Crawford to address this. They also signed Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson. Now, they have traded away every player that might have fulfilled this role and brought in, NO ONE ! Donovan was the obvious choice for this role, but when they traded him they didn’t even bring back anyone that will be on the 26 man in the next two years.
As stated Nootbaar is more of a cheerleader, not the same thing as a team leader. Burleson doesnt strike me as being one either, he’s more of the type that NEEDS someone to help show him the way! I like Herrera, and eventually good be a good one, but he’s still figuring his way through, and doesn’t need that added pressure.
I really think this is where Jon Jay, DeScalso, and Stubby have to try and fill this need, but it isn’t the same when they are Coaches.
The pitching staff has no one to help guide the young starters, and only Stanek for the bullpen. He’s kinda iffy for me.
Now that Spring Training has started, it’s almost too late to bring in someone now. I think this an error on Bloom’s part, and not his first of the off season!
In 2024, they brought in Crawford to backup MW, and brought it LL and KG to eat innings/secure the rotation.
In a rebuild, you find the leaders. Plus, you said yourself that Jay and Descalso can help a bit.
Lastly, you brought up Burly, IH and LN and made assertions about them. When in fact we have NO IDEA the culture in the clubhouse. Herrera might be a leader. Maybe it’s Winn. Maybe Burly has leadership traits.

Zip, zero, nada. Clubhouse leader most likely will be acquired during or after 2027 season. Face of franchise - emerge beginning of 2027.

I could see Winn being that guy in the clubhouse. Seems like a take charge kind of guy. Wouldn't be shocked to see him hold people accountable behind the scenes, get up their nose, but also knows when to be a softer touch.
I could see Burly be a leader too. If Masyn's more of a Chris Carpenter, I could see Burly be more like Wainwright.
On the pitching end, I think May's the obvious choice right now, but I also think McGreevy and Libby could be good dudes to lean on. Stanek is, from what I've read, already the big man in the bullpen.

Young team. It will evolve. Silly to speculate. One cannot bring someone in to be the team leader. There are lots of personalities on a 26 man roster. This is an evolutionary process. And, I'm not sure a necessary one.

Wetherholt will soon be the face of the franchise.
As far as leaders, I can see Liberatore and McGreevy growing into those roles with the pitching staff. Herrera will soon do the same. JJ has natural leadership abilities and it won't be lilong until it is his team.

I've been saying this all winter, Donovan was the last of the leaders. We have to hope some step forward. Maybe May or Libby on the pitching side. Have to hope Winn grows into it on the position player side. Or it could be that Pages will move into the leadership void

Why do you need these when they’re have AAA tryouts at Busch for the next few years…..until Bloom Farm produces all those All-stars and then BDW spends money. This fascination with anything having to do with winning MLB game…..leadership, vets, lineups, whatever is all moot.

Just get a guy named Larry Leader and you will have a Leader in the clubhouse . Don't overthink finding a leader . Just play the young guys.

When Walker breaks out it will be him. 30 homers 20 steals. Let’s hope it’s this year.
Winn, Wetherholt and Scott will be up the middle legacy for years.
How it’s not going be is Gorman, Nootbaar, Burleson nor Herrera. In Herrera case, how do you fill Yadi’s shoes?
Raines Rodriquez has a shot at being the future face of the franchise in a couple years.
