Trout
Carlton
Rivera
Torre
When did Trout retire?
And aren't Torre/Mariano "related", which was against your parameters?
I missed some of the caveats. Ruins my original picks and takes some of the fun out of it. but I want Bonds, Nolan Ryan, Wade Davis, and LaRussa if I must play by the rules. All greats and personal favs.

Oops. Didn't read the entire op.
Pujols
Hoffman
Carlton
Torre
Since Torre is both a retired MVP player and HOF manager is use him as a player/manager.

Here a game for a slow news day Friday. Play if you wish.
Add one starter, one reliever, and one position player to the current Cards roster. You also pick their manager. The caveat is, the players are all retired but still living. They could have played on any team and they were in their prime. Only 1 player per team, so you can't pick 3 Cards players. The manager pick also cannot be associated with any of the players. You get one pick from each category. By adding these 3 picks to the current roster, would you have a division leading team this year and what do you think the win/loss record would be by adding them on? I saw the recent post on CT about guessing wins/losses for the year, and decided to throw this wrinkle into the mix.
Mine would be Albert for position player.
Mariano Rivera for the pen.
Randy Johnson is my starter.
Manager is Bobby Cox
We finish the year 86-76 and we squeak in with the last wild card spot.
Roger Clemens - SP
John Smoltz - RP
Ken Griffey Jr - CF
Jim Leyland - Manager (*wanted to go Don Tony here, but forgot Smoltz had a cup of coffee with the Cards in '09)
93-69. NL Central Champs.

Nice rage-STL.
I thought this was kind of an interesting experiment to see what just 3 players and a Manager could do to a team. Now obviously we are talking Hall of Famer's here, but it just shows how a team could go from the outhouse to the penthouse with a few additional components. Maybe we can develop one or two players of this ilk, and have Bill spend for a couple, and we are back in business in a few years time. This exercise, to me anyway, kind of makes the spenders and the rebuilding groups both right. You have to spend to win, but we have to have a foundation before spending. It is all about timing. Thanks to those that jumped in.

Then my team doctor has the newly acquired players fail their physical and I get Donovan back. Donovan, Torre, Pujols. Pretty good 2-3-4 in the lineup.
