Re: Season Ticket Renewals

Eventually every market puts downwards pressure on prices. In other words, people cry 'uncle' and prices go down. That seems to be happening across sports in terms of cable revenues. It may be happening in ticket prices. Player salaries are going to level off and may go down some. They can cry conspiracy all they want, but most NHL teams seem to operate on pretty modest margins. To quote my father, you can't get blood out of a turnip.

MiamiLaw wrote: 03 Feb 2026 07:57 am The Panthers significantly increased season tickets next year too. Like 60% increase and this is after a few big increases in years past. Several I know are not renewing. Tons were talking about it last night.

Similar bad timing as the Blues renewal notice.

These teams and their billionaire owners just never stop trying to bleed the fanbase.
Without raising the prices of the primary revenue stream how do you expect the Blues to be able to spend to the rising cap?
I have no clue how much the team makes from season ticket holders but I’d guess it’s a very small part of the revenue in general. I assume sponsorship and tv deals are a far larger part.

It’s not just the Blues or just hockey. It’s a sports wide issue and society at large. These teams and businesses used to be a part of the community. They were a boost to the local community in many ways - players and owners alike. Now it’s all about the bottom line and how much the next hot shot can skyrocket contract expectations or the owners can build their tax funded billion dollar stadium. That then gets passed on to us and a family of four upper bowl to an NHL game in Feb sets you back $200 or more. Don’t even start with the NFL.

It’s just sad seeing the acceleration of late stage capitalism in general lately. I guess I know I’m old when I’m pining for “the good old days”.
Ticket sales are the primary revenue driver for the NHL, accounting for approximately 44% of the league's total revenue.

Without raising ticket prices they aren't a cap team
Definitely higher than I realized as far as proportion - and thanks to Kilokaai for the informative graphics too - but still isn't the cap tied to revenue? So the cap is going up because revenue is going up right?

I know this is rudimentary and that sports ownership has tons of different nuances, but on a basic level the basic ways to grow revenue are to (i) find new customers; and/or (ii) raise prices. So isn't this a chicken or the egg thing? The cap is rising because revenue is rising, so ticket prices go up, which increases revenue, so the cap goes up, so ticket prices go up to compensate, rinse repeat. Are the ticket prices reacting to the increasing cap or are they driving it? There is something to say about supply/demand and people are, so far, apparently willing to pay but it is discouraging to see traditional fans get pushed out more and more.

In the business world today, having flat revenue (i.e. generally making the same amount as last year) is considered bad business management. Revenue ALWAYS has to increase and even 1% or 2% is not enough. It has to be big. That's why Apple does a new iPhone every year. That's why every company has a subscription now for anything. You can't just buy and own something. They have to have you keep paying to use it. Otherwise the numbers don't go up and the shareholders and investors get mad...

Things are certainly changing quickly. We've basically ceded the world to China. It's gonna be quite the ride down the slope IMO. Sad times.
