Yep. And look how great that's worked for the Mets so far. And we'll see, even in the biggest market in baseball, how long a guy who is worth like at least five times more than our current owner, will last just throwing money at people. They just let Alonso walk.

If BDW is no longer in a position to own a competitive MLB team then he needs to sell to deeper pockets who can compete in this environment
Ownership of this franchise has changed hands multiple times in its history. It is the norm. But for some reason some fans have been brainwashed that no one would want or could afford this historic Franchise. Clueless thought.
The team may, or may not, be sold any time soon.

But most MLB owners - of any team - will operate to make some amount of annual profit. That boundary condition will probably determine what any ownership group will be willing to spend on an annual basis rather than their "want to" compete.

It’s a business. It seems obvious.

To act like the Cardinals aren't making bookoo profit year after year is just plain ridiculous!

I expect they've been making a profit. And I expect the spending level they have been at ($170-$180 million a season) to have been in line with them making a profit on the order of most other ML teams. So, once the focused rebuilding is over in a couple of years, I expect them to start raising payroll back to their pre-rebuilding levels.

They just don't need to spend $170-$180 million a year while they rebuild to put a just mediocre team on the field to satisfy me.

mattmitch,

It is also naive to think that they could "only" spend to the 170-180M threshold to be profitable. Get real. MLB teams (and the Cardinals) have been literally rolling in the $$$ year after year. Those numbers may put them in line with their market size around the league, but thay does not mean that's the best they can do.

I doubt Arby’s is subsidizing the Cardinals payroll.

DeWitt and the STL ownership partners own a 50% stake in Ballpark Village.
DeWitt could easily approve a 20OM payroll budget and still make huge profits from his many, many business interests and revenue sources.

They COULD do also sorts of things that you might think are "doing better." But that doesn't mean any of those levels of spending are rational to expect.

Again, I just expect that their level of spending is consistent with them making a profit similar to other mid-market teams with similar revenue. That, to me, is the only rational expectation to start from.

No one is acting like that. To act like it is the Cardinals obligation to spend profit on their MLB roster is just plain ridiculous.

Sure they could. But what teams in MLB are spending a bunch more money relative to their market size?

I get it. I don't think it's too much to spend above their budget for a few years if the right player or players come along, and the Cardinals have done so in the past.
