I’d guess Miguel Amaya is the starting catcher, Christian Bethancourt as the backup. Thought I saw Leo Bernal will also be on the roster.

Pitchers and catchers report to spring training February 10th. Panama won't start playing with MLB players until they scrimmage the Yankees and Tigers on March 3 and 4th in Florida before heading to San Juan, Puerto Rico for pool play.

The WBC is fun and I like it, but is there literally any other time that they could schedule it? It's enough to ruin it for me.

"Enough to ruin it" is a little much because it's still a lot of fun to watch. But yeah there's got to be another time to do it that would be better for everyone.

Imagine taking a 2-3 week All-Star break for this, it would be phenomenal level of performance and could dramatically increase the sport's popularity worldwide. Would be worth shortening the season over too, since really we're headed that way anyway.

That or doing it anytime Nov/Dec/Jan would be better than during ST, probably weighted toward January so the best pitchers have a chance to rest their arms for a couple months.

For someone wanting to get back into Catching, I would think getting familiar with all the new pitchers would be a high priority.

Disclaimer ~ I loathe the timing of the WBC. I know the environment is electric...ClassicO has attested to this several times. I don't like Catchers and Pitchers missing Spring Training for the WBC. I wish it was held in December, but that would probably be difficult on the pitchers.

What a dumb response.
Playing in the WBC, for many, is a sense of national pride. It also is game action, like spring training, that allows players to prep for the season.
I get those that want him to be at ST with the team, but this is an honor for him and the organization supports players in this (and rightly so).

You would think that playing the WBC would render ready for season players. You would think the younger guys back at ST are getting mucho time, this a great assessment period under the new regime.

The down side, playing the WBC will bring with it injuries. Most just naggers. But still.

Upon further review, the call on the field is reversed. There was an objective by teams to also benefit financially from a well run ST. If the studs aren’t there, some percentage of the ST crowd will diminish. Loss of income.
