He has a great personality. I think he'd be an awesome guy to get a beer with. That's part of the reason I don't like him as a manager. He's too much cheerleader, not enough commander-in-chief.
He laughed at it, but didn't laugh at it as though "How ridiculous is that? It was more of a "What else can I do but laugh?" He took it seriously saying "That's what happens when you sit in the manager's chair and that's fine because that's where I want to be."
Again, more commander, less cheerleader-I'm-your-buddy and he could be serviceable. But he also has too many other bad strategies he consistenly employs.

Monday (yesterday) afternoon, the Fastlane interviewed Oli Marmol. They asked him, "Now that you're entering your 5th year, what's the main thing you thought you knew during your first season, but you realize now you actually had no clue about it back then?"
Oli's response:
"I had no idea I would be hated this much."
He was able to laugh it off and followed up by saying it's okay because being in the big chair means ultimately every decision ends with you and that's what he says he wants.
Personally, I feel if you truly hate a sports player/coach you're trying to fill some other void in your life with sports. Actually hating a person in sports makes you one of those cukoo for cocoa puffs fans.
I think he seems like a great guy but loathe him as a manager due to his unapologetic demeanor and the fact he repeats the same mistakes over and over again. I've still never heard him admit that Game 1 against the Phils in 2022 was a mistake. He doesn't need to slap his forehead and scream omg I was an idiot. If he'd just show he could grow and learn from his mistakes and admit if I had a chance to that differently, I would. Others...
-stop giving young players constant "scheduled off-days" omg nothing kills momentum like these pre-decided idiotic moves
-go with the hot hand instead of the perfect matchup, in pitching, hitting, and even defensive shifts/pitch calls
-if any starting pitcher, bp arm, hitter is on fire during a game, keep him in there as long as possible, even if a certain situation calls for a different matchup
-stop making late-innning D replacements with your best hitters unless your 90%+ sure removing him will not come back to bite you
Those are mine. Others have thoughts of things he could do to quell some of the hate?
Maybe he'll read this and listen. lmao
He's laughing because he is set for life with the money he is making and kept his job in spite of 2 losing seasons in the last 3.
Marmol has an overall winning record (just slightly over .500) of .502 in his three years. LaRussa’s first three years was a .504 record.
Don’t remember the same criticism with a similar record.

What do we count. The number of overall wins. Or the number of winning seasons.
The total wins, as evidenced by, can be greatly skewed by a good year.

Anybody that has venom for a manager is sorely lacking in impulse control. The very nature of the game is conducive to second guessing. Bring in a reliever and he gives up a homerun..."What an idiot!"...Leave a pitcher in and he gives up a homerun.."What an idiot!" LOL They can't win. Herzog said something along the lines of ..."I'm a genius when I have a good bullpen and an idiot when I have a bad one." I paraphrase of course.

By using the ‘winning seasons’ formula , then you could have the following record 82-80, 82-80, and 60- 102. .. a whopping 224-262 record but argue to me you had 2 of 3 winning seasons and deserve to be given added years. As a GM , my reply may be ‘sorry you have a 224-262 won/loss record so bye bye.
Just don’t buy the ‘winning seasons’ theory sorry.

I hear ya. Good response. You could also go 90-72 twice with two post seasons. This 36 games over.500. Then one awww chit season wipes out much of the margin.
I’m a numbers person I think. I find your assertion intriguing.

Just not a good Manager.
I don't think fans really "hate" him as he seems like a good guy, the majority of us just want him to go away since we know he's NOT the right Manager for this team.
Hopefully that happens after 2026!

Makes sense, seeing that situational awareness isn't his strong suit. I don't hate the guy obviously, but I have a feeling he won't be the guy to lead the turnaround. I wouldn't mind if he did though. If he can figure out how to earn it, he'd be my new favorite manager.

Very instructive that is the first thing that came to mind for him.

There are things I disagree with but hate is a pretty strong emotion and I certainly don't feel that for someone I don't even know.
I don't care for the way he handles his pitchers and I don't care for the on bench attitude of players during games when the team is taking a beating. You see guys laughing carrying on like its recess. Doesn't send a good message to the younger players.
You never saw that with any other manager the team has
had and that cavalier attitude extends to the field.

No. He’s laughing because it’s an uncomfortable truth. He.should have 3 losing seasons given the talent, but managed to overcome one year. It’s a futile feeling to be judged by people who are convinced they know more about baseball than a ML manager.
Experienced, successful managers know better than to put themselves in this position. The right question would be knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently?

Not entirely all his fault ...but when Mo gave him the extension and said something like 'we don't want him to feel the pressure of having to win".....

Funny thing.
I have been fortunate enough to enjoy many, many successes over the decades and only a few disappointments - and I can count the complaints from others on one hand.
Which is something else The Marmot has never figured out - and likely never will.

There is plenty of wisdom in your comments, but context is important. Oli followed Schildt who was fired for “philosophical” differences we now believe to have been a tyrannical behavior to players and coaches alike. Moreover, I remember Lou Brock expressing surprise that the clubhouse mood was so light after a loss; something so different at Wrigley. We had several managers ignoring the antics of Martinez stacking cups at the end of the dugout.
Few Cardinal managers have had to put up with the lack of talent Oli has. Not sure what kind of tone is appropriate in the Cardinals’ dugout….

I would suggest that for the past 2 seasons the Cardinals victory totals have been toward the top end of their range of outcomes. With the rosters provided, do you think many more wins were possible?
