It's a zero risk, minor league deal, on a guy that I'm sure someone sees something positive with. Adding arms to the organization is never a bad thing.

That 5.48 ERA is a little off putting. One wonders if there wasn't a better option in the minors that they already have signed. Not too many pitchers turn the corner at 30. They pretty well are what they are by then. More suffering for fans I guess.

Yeah, I don't care whether it's just a minor league deal. It's a waste of time and a waste of money. This guy is a nobody.

The money is negligible. The time wasted cost us nothing in terms of what we REALLY need to go after. We haven't missed out on anything.

I wouldn't be shocked if minor league deals are farmed out to one of the assistant general managers.

Where's the buck stop? Farming out is a convenient excusing of a Bloom move...

This isn't a move where the "buck stops". This is a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL. If our season is hinging on a MINOR LEAGUE DEAL then we've got bigger problems...no matter who offers them.

The point is, this is a nothingburger of a deal. LITERALLY EVERY TEAM makes them. Innings need to be covered, in St. Louis, in spring training, and in Memphis. I don't understand why you've got your knickers in a twist over it.

You don't waste minor league spots on has beens/never was guys like this. This is the same type of argument some on CT were making for keeping Hampson on the 26-man roster far too long. The argument was that the 26th man was not important. Yes, he is.You don't give away major league roster spots to non-major league players. He could not hit at all. Sometimes he ended up hitting cleanup in extra innings. That was so great.

Blewett is LITERALLY on a minor league deal. And yes, every team "wastes" spots like this on has beens/never weres. Let's look at the 2025 roster of the Oklahoma City Comets, the AAA farm team of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The OKC Comets went 84-66. That's a pretty good year! On that roster were...:

James Outman. Outfielder, 28. Was once an outfielder of some note on the Dodgers. He fizzled out.
Luken Baker. That blue chip prospect that we let go of earlier last year. Also 28.
Michael Chavis. At one point a decent prospect for...Boston...I think? Age 29.
Chris Okey. Age 30. Has played less than 10 MLB games. None for the Dodgers.
Eddie Rosario. Age 33. Long time MLB outfielder who's washed out. He had gotten some down ballot support for the MVP years ago.
Nick Senzel. Age 30. Was once a top prospect. Never really cut it in major league baseball.

Oh! I almost forgot the pitchers.

Alexis Diaz. Age 29. Former All-star. Had a good couple seasons in Cincy. Bounced to three teams last year, sticking with none of them.
Noah Davis. Age 29. Has pitched in 27 MLB games. Has an ERA over 9.
Julian Fernandez. Age 29. Pitched in 10 career MLB games. Has an ERA of almost 9.
J.P. Feyereisen. Age 32. He was a pretty decent set-up guy for a while. Hasn't pitched a full season in the majors since '21.
Joe Jacques. He's 30. Hasn't pitched in the majors since '24. Pitched in 23 games with the BoSox in '23, with bad results.
Kyle Funkhouser. 31. Hasn't pitched in the majors since '21 with Detroit. That was a pretty decent season for him.

So, I'm gonna go out on a limb here...maybe other, more recently better ran teams than the Cardinals do these deals, too?

The problem comes if he's brought up...nothing in his past shows he's anything but rotted fruit, not low hanging, but fruit on the ground rotting. Plus a reliever names Blewett isn't a positive sign.

True but I wonder if Bloom intends to go into 2026 with the bullpen we closed out 2025 with. I don't think it's a coincidence we trade 3 relievers in the July dump. Romero, Svanson and O'brien are great. The remainder are upside down in H/9 similar to Blewett.
