At a minimum. What do you think about Pete Hansen and Cooper Hjerpe?
who would take Hjerpe? Isn't the rule that anyone selected has to be added to and remain on the other team's 40 man or they come back to us? Teams aren't just going to draft long shots that aren't worth a 40 man slot.
depends on how he's rostered...I believe. If he's rostered in AAA, then I believe (and I'm not even 20% sure on this, so forgive me) he would need to be housed on the MLB roster of the team that selected him for the full year....26 man roster.

others?
Is dropping a player from the 40 the same as a DFA? Or a waiver placement?

??

If they pick a player from the MLB portion of the R5 draft, they'll play....last example Ryan Fernandez in December 2023. He didn't "sit on the on the bench all season"
Then there are players like Workman. The Cubs did him no favors picking him up and then not playing him. Traded to the white sox for cash considerations and then released and went back to Detroit where he had a subpar season.

It is DFA. 7 days to trade, place on waivers or outright release.

you can non-tender a player if you wish...don't offer them a contract prior to the NT Deadline...I think it's Nov. 20th or 21st this year....for Pre Arb and Arb players...they would become a free agent and off the 40man roster at that point.

that's a moot point b/c the protected player deadline is Tuesday the 18th...so disregard my point....unless you can announce a non-tender before hand?

edit ~ according to Justbaseball.com https://www.justbaseball.com/mlb/non-te ... ster-cuts/

we have 2 candidates for non-tender....Alcala and King

I thought one of the writers discussed this. I also could be wrong. But, I thought they put him on the 26 man roster, but then he goes to the 60 day disabled list so he doesn't take up an actual roster spot, albeit, they have to pay him a ML salary while on the 60 day. Then he has to go back up to the MLs when his rehab is done. The trickery that could be in play is they just keep him rehabbing the rest of the year...I am not certain what protects against that...

If they just leave Hanson unprotected, they are more stupid than I thought. At least include him a trade or something.

37 on the 40man roster as of this moment.

to protect more they'd have to do more trimming....will they?

Blaze Jordan, Hancel Rincon, Max Rajcic, Pete Hansen, Randel Clemente, Cooper Hjerpe, Ramon Mendoza, Austin Love...all at risk of being selected if not protected.

Jordan and Rajcic will have the MLB protection...I think...so a team selecting them would have to keep them on the their 26man MLB roster all year long. Not sure how Hjerpe, Mautz and Hansen will be declared by Tuesday.... on the AAA or on the AA roster

IMO ~ I think we lose Rincon, Mendoza, Clemente, Love and Hansen to the Draft in December. I'm not sure if we protect Hjerpe...will a team protect him and stash him on their 26 man all year while is in need of rehabbing? That's medical malfeasance.

November 18: Deadline for teams to add players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft.
November 21: Non-tender deadline for teams to offer contracts to unsigned, arbitration-eligible players

Looks like teams are waiting until the last day...

non-tender candidates for the Cards are Acala and King...do you think they'll non-tender either one tomorrow to help make room on the 40man? Currently 37 spots are filled. I was hoping for an early trade before tomorrow, but that seems to not be the case.

Not to be a slam on the players but.....
Teams can pick up players like these throughout the season,,,,
The spots,,especially in CB's first attempt at rosters need to be
treated with some measure of importance and they
have a few that fall into the minimal upside category

of course, I was just wondering how the Cards were going to attempt to protect so many players at tomorrow's Rule 5 deadline...and better yet who are they going to protect? This probably one of the hardest R5/Protection decisions in recent memory. Only 3 open spots...Non-tendering one or both players looks attractive...as you said, Teams can pick up players like throughout the season (basically at any time)

$7.1M in potential non-tender savings below.

$2.1M King - I would nontender him
$2.1M Alcala - I would keep him and DFA Roycroft
$2.9M Gorman!

Unless someone in St Louis has a new idea on how to rescue Gorman, it could be time to cut the losses after 2 consecutive dismal seasons.

Last year he delivered negative $1.5M in value. He's been paid minimum wage the past 2 years and still managed to not earn his salary.

After 1581 plate appearances at 28.7 runs below average, will we pay him another $2.9M to continue to drag down the team and take at bats away from others? Even with Arenado gone, he has nowhere to play assuming Wetherholt's time has come. Even with Wetherholt and Donovan gone, it is questionable if he is better than Fermin, Saggese, or Prieto. No speed. No defense. No bat. Decreasing power. Lefty swinger. The league knows how to get him out. What are his positive attributes again? What potential are supposed to be seeing? Talk about well hidden potential!

I wonder if Tampa Bay would pay a player like him $2.9M in 2026?

I don't think we will lose anyone that we don't protect. I mean there are 10-18 picks generally in the Rule V draft and half of them eventually get returned. I'm not worried that Hjerpe or Hansen get picked up, they would have to keep them on their roster for the whole year. We lost Connor Thomas last year and he was injured pretty much the whole year. He became a free agent after this year and Atlanta signed him.
