lots of that $ may be covered by insurance

No it is not covered by insurance. The Nationals felt the premiums were too high. They also tried to buy him out a few years back I believe and I think the agreement was agreed upon in structure but the Nationals changed something that (upset) Strasburgboff and I think it fell through. Something to that effect.

All of which prove IMO that baseball needs to stop guaranteed long-term contracts.

Zero incentive besides pride for these guys to perform.

And far too many don’t have any pride.
No one is forcing the owners to offer a horrendous contract

Chris Davis should be mentioned:

2012-2015: 161 HRs. OPS? Around .900 overall, 14.8 WAR

Signs a 7 year deal at 161 million.

2016-2020 (retires without playing last 2 years)
92 HRs, probably a .650 OPS, -2.8 WAR

Good mentions so far. My top 5 would be:

1. Rendon
2. Bruce Sutter (Atlanta)
3. Kris Bryant
4. Chris Davis
5. Bob Horner replacing Jack Clark.

HM -Nick Esasky (Atlanta) Guy got vertigo and barely played.

Pablo Sandoval with the Sox and Pavano with the Yanks were huge busts. The money given at those times, for those contracts, were considered pretty large sums for terrible performances.
