Braves Claim Michael Siani From Cardinals
By Anthony Franco | November 6, 2025 at 4:46pm CDT
The Braves claimed outfielder Michael Siani off waivers from the Cardinals, relays Jeff Jones of The Belleville News-[political party]. St. Louis also outrighted pitchers Anthony Veneziano and Zack Thompson
while selecting infielder Bryan Torres onto the 40-man roster.
I didn't see that move coming. The others fall in line. Good for Torres...not sure his bat will translate to the MLB level. But he's MORE than earned it with the Cards Org the last 2 seasons.
His numbers say he deserved a look last year. Especially considering the jokers Mo did call up.

Shotgun until proven otherwise in that outfield.
I wouldn't use a ink pen anyway.

Why do I get the feeling Thompson will put it together elsewhere…

Im not convinced they won't re-sign him to a minor league deal.

If I am Zack I would be looking for a fresh start if one was offered, just me.

Yes to both of you.

What was your take on Thompson Craviduce? I feel he got plenty of chances and just flushed them away. I’m glad hey cut bait.
I have that view on many players in the upper minors right now.... I wish he would've stayed healthy last year, or at least stayed healthy enough to comeback from his Spring Training injury...it got worse and worse for him. He was supposed to be a stud starter...but he never panned out that way. Maybe, and I've leaned this way for a few years, missing his first full pro season b/c of CoVid wrecked his player arc....still, he couldn't come out of it. Now we have so many LHP that he's tossed aside. Shame...but it is what it is.
I was hoping they (new F.O.) had some big brass ones and let Cooper Hjerpe go....but so far it looks like they'll try and hold onto him. Maybe they try and let him slip through the R5 Draft, but I doubt it. They'll probably put Hjerpe on the 40 man....giving him a chance to go 4 straight years on the IL for a majority of a season....that's his first 4 seasons as a Pro.
Best wishes to Zack. Wish he could stay, but we need the roster spots...and there's no way of knowing if we can pull off a trade with Gray, Nado or Contreras prior to Nov. 13th.
Thanks for the response.

So through some loophole Thompson is actually NOT being cut. Something about time on the IL.

Scott and Siani are redundant but maybe Scott will learn to hit better. So no need for Siani. Not surprised he was claimed; high floor.
Glad to see they chose Torres over Siani. There is a minimal level of hitting ability required to be a MLB bench player. Torres plays a lot of positions.
Other marginal guys...
Yohel Pozo - how many catchers can you roster? time to move on?
John King - time to move on?
Chris Roycroft - time to move on?
Sem Robberse - could be outrighted and possibly not lost? otherwise time to move on
Matt Koperniak - time to move onJose Fermin - I say keep him as 13th position player or AAA shuttle guy along with Torres.
Nick Raquet - I'd keep him and let him compete with Mosqueda to fill John King's big shoes
Jorge Alcalá - I'd keep him; Cards don't have many relievers. He's been good in the past and relievers can have bad years and still bounce back.
fermin is out of options now. he has to stay on the 26 man roster this year or clear waivers. he performed well enough on bench last year to be 26th man
also id keeo king. last year was rpugh but relievers are notoriously volatule year to year and ge was good prior to that. theres just as much of a chance of him rebounding and having a good year as any midtier free agent as guys crash and have down years in bullpen all the time.

Hmmm. Because the Cardinals "outrighted" him off the 40-man, Thompson elected free agency. The Braves just signed him. But they did not put him on their 40-man??

Edit: Here is an article that explains it better

Thompson was put on outright waivers. Nobody claimed him in the time limit. Because he has 5 years experience, he had the right to declare free agency rather than being removed from the Cardinal 40-man. The Braves signed him and had the right to not add him to their 40-man if Thompson accepted that. Thompson did.
So Zach would rather be in the Braves system than the Cardinals. He was being passed by other injured LHP here I guess.
