I think it should be started in the 11th or 12th innings though.

I would be fine with that. I like it in the regular season it beats the boring 1,2,3 innings single or walk out of inning. There’s a lot more strategy do u walk the next batter and set up double play if a grounder or fly ball advances the runner to third do you walk bases loaded to set up force out everywhere. There is excitement and tension starting every inning. I was against it when it was first announced but like it now. But yea glad they don’t do it in the post season

A game should not last 4 hours plus.
in football the overtime rules change once a number of chances don’t determine a winner.
I think MLB will eventually do the same once they get a marathon playoff game til 2 a.m.
So I propose no ghost runner thru 13 innings (that’s 4 extra frames.. starting with 14th innning (5th overtime frame) then go to ghost runner.
Both college and pro football have a hybrid overtime scoring rule that is in place..so should baseball.

As I said it won’t happen til they get a game ,for example a clinching WS game thst goes to nearly 2 -3 a.m.

Who missed the extra inning automatic runner rule?
It is a dumb rule in my opinion and takes away from the excitement of what little is left in baseball.
Agreed

That idiotic rule needs to be gone, hope they nix in during the new CBA discussions.
I bet the players love it. Saves some ugly bull[shirt] in an already overly long regular season.
Owners love it even more, I suspect.
Protects pitchers - which is a huge cost center.
Reduces / controls stadium operating costs.
Stupid rule which creates an inferior product.
Players and owners don't care about the product - just themselves.
I don't see the product suffering by implementing it for the regular season.
The elimination of the rule for the playoffs is nothing less than an admission by MLB that the rule creates an inferior regular season product.

regular season, I'm OK with it...maybe make it after the 10th inning

Post season, just fine without it.

Everything should he earned “old-style” in the playoffs. Agree it is at least tolerable after the 10th in regular season too, but could do without it at all.

During the regular season, play the 10-12 innings straight (about an hour of additional game time), then apply the “runner on 2nd” feature starting the 13th.
I could live with that.

Very interesting and important comment: ""the excitement of what little is left in baseball".
Would the game last night have been an instant classic with the automatic runner rule?
Would fans of both teams remember for the next many years sitting up until the wee hours watching a tense battle, with pitchers and defenders making one key play after another in a battle to advance to the next round?
Well said, Mel.

Here’s a twist. After the ninth, both teams had no trouble with getting runners on base. They needed no help. Maybe just maybe the opposite is true- later innings, less effective pens, many runners. No help needed.

No one cares about a long regular season game and no one sticks around for them. Ratings are horrible for extra innings. The rule was and has been a good thing for the regular season.

How many games does this actually affect? Should this go into effect for rain games when most of the crowd leaves but they keep playing??

It’s perfect as is. Many sports have different rules for extra time between regular season and postseason. Long extra inning games in the regular season serve no purpose.

Cards had 12 Extra inning games, 6 at home. So out of 81 home games the fans had a CHOICE to stick around for 6. I always enjoy seeing more baseball……

Rain games can end early without even playing the full 9 innings.

Which pro sports completely changes the normal ingame play?
Does the NHL remove the goalie in OT
Does the NFL move the end zone to the 30yd line?
Does the NBA lower the basket a ft?
