Absolutely stunning! More incompetence from the Oilers. They get a short-term reprieve from McDavid, but then flush the money on a dumb hockey player like Walman. He definitely has skill, but he is stupid!
Yeah, I don't get either move. Each is stunning for opposite reasons.

Nah, I’m sure they’re still basking in the glow of the Kaprisov deal and snickering and high fiving over the Walman contract.

McDavid has to be thinking, "I gave a huge discount so they could (bleep) money up against the wall like this?"

If 12.5M is true then that is a huge discount. It also tells us that McDavid will most likely be gone in 2 years. I also can’t believe they committed 7 years at that money to Walman! That 3x6 for Fowler feels even better after seeing that.

If it’s true? The Oilers themselves reported it. And he’s now signed for 3 more years, not 2 (still 1 more year left on his current deal).

Why would you say he’s gone after the 2 additional years? To me, this is him saying he wants to win in EDM but he’s not signing the rest of his career away. That he’s likely to leave if they still can’t close it out in those 3 years…but that the door is certainly open for him to sign with then again in another 2-3 years.

I just didn’t see the details reported anywhere, wasn’t doubting it. It’s just a gut feeling with how long he took to sign this contract and only doing 2 years.

Lol so McDavid gives a substantial discount for 2 years in the hopes of winning a Cup and the Oilers immediately turn around and sign Walman for $7 mil.

Well if he wanted to leave he could’ve just done so now and not kicked the can down the road 2 years.

But I do see the short term as a bit of a put up or shut up move - him telling Oilers management that he’s taking a discount to leave cap space for others but that he expects them to competently use it or he’s probably gone. The Oilers have squandered most of the prime of the world’s best player IMO. But they now have 3 more years to get it done. I think they can but they just really need to find a goalie. The problem is everyone knows that’s their missing piece and aren’t going to just give it to them. I guess we’ll see how it goes!

Huge respect for McDavid trying to give a Cup win to the fans in Edmonton. I feel it will end up being a waste of 2 more years. Still..... a lot of respect owed to McDavid for enabling this for the fans.

I don't know if "squandered" is the exact term I'd use. They did get to the Finals two years in a row with one of them being a Game 7. It isn't like a Mike Trout situation. But yea completely agree that their salary cap and personnel management have been horrible.
