I dunno…the problem with hiring guys like Pujols and Molina is that you eventually have to fire guys like Pujols and Molina. I don’t know that these guys can manage (I’d lean Yadi more than Albert), and if we’re going down that route I’d rather be their second managerial stop than their first.

As for Marmol, it looks like Bloom is going to let him finish his contract. For a team with no playoff aspirations that’s probably fine. I’m pretty sure when this team is ready to win again it won’t be under Oli.

Yeah that's all fair. I guess I was thinking of it as something for people to be excited about considering the state of the team.

So true. The winningest managers in MLB: Connie Mack, Tony La Russa, John McGraw, and Bobby Cox were not great players.
Joe Torre and Dusty Baker were very good players, but not HOF.

Red Schoendienst is one who was good enough both as a player and manager to make the HOF.

I saw Musial, albeit late in his career. I like to think I've seen the best left AND right handed hitters on the Cards in my lifetime.

Dave Roberts was hardly a star in his playing days. Neither was Bruce Bochy. Johnson had a nice career, but maybe I'm too much of a kid born in the early 90's, but I hadn't know of him as a player until this moment...nice career, but not LEGENDARY.

Robinson lost more games than he won but about a 100 or so. Torre and Baker were good on both sides. I think it's fair to put Red on this list, too. Could probably add Lou Pinella, too, but that probably falls under the Davey Johnson file.

Plenty of legendary MLB players didn't do too hot as coaches or managers. Ted Williams couldn't get any traction. Nor could Gil Hodges, Eddie Mathews, Paul Molitor, Tony Perez, or Ryne Sandberg. Those are just the more modern guys.

Explain Tony LaRussa then? Or Earl Weaver? Or Herzog? Tommy Lasorda? Bobby Cox? Casey Stengel? Jim Leyland? He couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag...in the minors!

Success as a player in Major League baseball has no effect on how good of a manager you are. In fact, I know my knowledge is somewhat limited, but I can't pick out a name in this list of hall of fame managers that had a good career in post-WWII baseball as a player.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Albert does well wherever he ends up (unless it's against St. Louis) but history is not often kind to guys like this taking to managing.

The closest to Red on that list would be Torre who went to 6 world series as a manager and 8 all star games as a player with a MVP.
Johnson world series as a manager but 1,200 hits as a player.
Robinson HOF player but losing record as a manager.
Baker world series manager and good but not great numbers as an outfielder. 1,900 hits.
Roberts world series manager 700 hits as a player.
Bochy 4 world series manager but backup catcher. Career 192 hits.
Red Schoendienst was world series manager and in the modern era for second basemen he remains in the top 10 in hits at the position. 9 all star games. Legit HOF both as player and manager.
