I would imagine if he doesn't get a serious shot this year, that's the last we see of Alexandrov.
He'll either look for another opportunity elsewhere or head back to Russia and play in the KHL.
good riddance
I mean if he can't make the big club, and he leaves I certainly won't lose any sleep over it, but would hate to lose a 2nd rounder for nothing.
I will say though sometimes guys are just AAAA players and that's it.
Well, first off, an average 2nd round pick has a 25% chance of even having a 300 game NHL career and a 21% chance of scoring 100+ points over their entire career. Secondly, if he busts, and he almost certainly will, we still wouldn’t lose the 2nd for nothing. We got some NHL games out of him and quite a bit of quality minor league play which would’ve helped some of our other prospects that either did or will eventually make it. It’s not a lot but it’s not nothing.
I suppose a 3rd point too. He was taken with the very last pick of the 2nd round that year. We used the 62nd overall pick on him, not the 32nd.
Oh yeah, I'm not going to lament anything if we lose him and get nothing for it at all.
Personally if nothing else if there's an indication by the tdl he's not going to make it here, I'd rather just trade him for a lottery ticket than just letting him leave for nothing that's all.
If we don't and he walks for nothing we get nothing, no biggie.
Ok, fair enough. And that’s a good point about possibly trading him for a similar asset. While I doubt Alexandrov would have much trade value, maybe there is a team with a comparable d-man we could make a swap for. Overall, I think the Blues are in good shape depth-wise but if I saw any weakness at all, it’d be at defensive depth. We let Suter and Leddy go and only replaced them with Mailloux. That’s likely a longterm upgrade but short-term, that’s a lot of experience out the door. We’d likely only be able to get a Rosen, Scheunemen, maybe a Kessel caliber player for Alexandrov but that depth matters as teams tend to use up to 10 different d-men each season.
But if not, then Alexandrov can still help Springfield. He projects to be their top forward, or at least one of their top forwards, and that adds value too.

Yep, that's about what I was thinking. Some mid defensive prospect or if we are in the thick of things come TDL a Michael Del Zotto type who can offer some sort of veteran presence just in case, not a player or pick of any significance.
You aren't wrong about the last part either. There's a lot to be said for even your minor league team making regular deep playoff runs, and if he's a linchpin for that and one of the main reasons that is a pretty good reason to just let things run their course.
