Not to steer this off topic, but I've worked for - or around - a number of people in upper-level leadership across three organizations and this is surprisingly common. If you can project confidence while hiding your total lack of self-awareness during the hiring process, you can get any job in this country.

I have served as a performance consultant to many companies over the years.
You have touched on a key point which I have observed many times, and which is painful to correct.
When an organization is struggling, there are invariably those individuals who seek self-serving explanations for a decline in organization performance and there are others who instead seek solutions.
When the former holds sway success is impossible, when the latter hold sway success is nearly inevitable.
