1. not being available for 150 games
2. posting a sub 100 OPS+
3. playing for a team that draws (well) under 3M fans.
4. not playing in a pennant race or in October.
the only point that should ve relevant is point 1.

points 2-4 should have nothing tk do with a gold glove and plenty if gold glovers have come from nonplayoff teams although popukar players have gotten boosts before.

even 1 thoughbisnt as huge a knock as you think it is because the number that play 150 games isnt that large but availability and playingbis really the only one of those points even somewhat relevant

The first one may have some bearing 2,3,4 would be dumb for anyone to factor into who should get a gold glove
Mike Schmidt was an excellent 3rd baseman, however there were seasons where he had over 20 errors and Ken Rietz would have around 5, but would still win the GG! Schmidt would, of course have over 30 home runs and 100 RBI’s, while Rietz would have like 4 HRs and 40 RBI’s.
Ken Reitz had below league average range factor. He was very good at balls hit right at him, but he had poor range. Schmidt was always well above league average in range factor when he was awarded gold gloves. You are correct that often times voters for GG gave the award to guys who were also excellent hitters.

theory, meet reality...

Plenty of times growning up the winner was the SS with the highest OPS (Arod, Jeter)_ or who played for the team with the most fans and there was controversy over whether he actually displayed the best fielding performance.
Popular okayers get a boost still to an ectent as well as name guys who won it before even ifntheir skills deteriorated

however, most the bad fielder gold gloves were older. its been a lot better for multipke years stince advanced stats came out other than questionable criteria fornutility gg to give donovan over edman.

case in point tyler oneil winning his gold glove with us when he was a sub.200 hitter that year

you can find examples of bad fielders winning gold gloves but the vast majority are from 15 or more years ago. its gotten better
