He swings at way too many bad pitches. He isn't Roberto Clemente and needs to get a pitch in a hittable zone. He won't get back on track till he shows the discipline to lay off bad pitches.
His OBP is .355.
OPS+ is 119.
To those who never played the game at a serious level, news flash: everyone's asz drags in August.
It's hot, humid, and you've already played 130 games.
He is one of two bright spots on the entire team.
Burleson went 4-5 with a walk-off HR tonight - in August.
Gorman has an OPS of .834, with 3 doubles, 3 HR and 14 walks - in August.
They don't appear to have a dragging posterior.
As for Herrera, he is pretty much the opposite of being a bright spot.
He has 8 XBH's in June, July, and August COMBINED (compared to 25 for Burleson, 17 for Gorman, and 33 for Conteras).
Herrera's problem isn't August.
He problem is he just isn't very good.

Also, pitchers have to deal with the dog days of summer every bit as much as hitters might, probably moreso. Look at the struggles of Sonny Gray in the heat. A pretty lame excuse I'm sure Herrera himself would never allow.

Outstanding point.
Herrera himself would not blame the calendar.

Not if Hererra insist on going back to catching!
For some insane reason Oli has pulled the plug on playing him in LF.
Between Hererra-Burleson-Gorman you have three guys with no real position other than DH (Bumbles could play 1st base but that's manned by WillyC for a few more seasons).
Looks like Bloom may deal one, maybe even two for pitching.

Last year his plate discipline was very poor. He swing at everything.
Better this year but still a ways to go.
Bat to ball skills look good. Time will tell.

If he is limited to DH, then compare him to someone like Jose Martinez. Jose was likeable, and a decent hitter (actually, an ideal 5 slot hitter for a time). But as soon as his numbers regressed just a little bit (because he wasn't a prolific power to begin with even though he looked like it at 6-5), he was very replaceable. That seems to be the case with Herrera, where we are now learning that the 3 HR game he had might have been an aberration, power-wise.

What worries me is his power outage the last couple months. And it's not bc he stopped hitting the ball hard it's because he has a terrible 52.5%% groundball rate.
For reference, Jordan Walker, who everyone agrees needs to loft the ball more, has a 48% GB rate this year.

If Herrera wants to catch Bloom will likely trade him to someone who will give him a chance.

Herrera has only played 77 games this year? Where did you see 130 games played?

Yep
And given he can hit, then in a package he could fetch a solid return (re: Starting pitcher).
But the poor fools will learn very quickly that he couldn't throw me or you out MidMo.

He could definitely throw me out unless he threw it into centerfield. But the smart front office folks alrteady know he can't throw out aunt Minnie.

Yea, not sure why he wants to go back to catching since he's not got a major league arm.
