Not to say walker is or will ever be great but comparing him to Judge is silly Judge didnt make it the majors until he was 24 and he hit a robust .179 with a .600 OPS his first season so walkers already hit 25 homeruns and driven in 102 more runs than judge did at the same at age

I thought he was rushed too. But, he doesn't look like a natural with a great swing and instincts. He seems overmatched most of the time. One way or another, we shall see.

Heston Kjerstad was the #2 overall pick in 2020 and is 26 now. He played outfield in the SEC before going pro; how's he looking? JW was the second 3B taken in 2020 behind the 1st overall pick Spencer Torkelson. The Cards played JW at 3B across 146 games to start his minor league career from A,A+,AA) before switching his position to OF while at AA. After getting 31 starts in the OF at AA, he went to Arizona Fall league and collected 21 more starts as an OF. Then he was named a 2023 Opening Day starter in the OF, what could go wrong?

Or what about taking a prospect that is having some success in displaying bat to ball skills, a pretty important tool last time I checked, and determining the results of that loud contact aren't what we want. So he's sent to AAA to change things and rush his development because the organization is desperate for more slugging % in their lineup. Messing with a swing to force a result well before it needed it be done. A couple years later, the front office comes out and talks about how poorly they've managed the development of their farm system and the immediate need to course correct. Great stuff.

Had this newfound player development angle been in place back in 2019-2020, I wonder how things might be different? I wonder if a more in-tune front office would have instead moved JW over to 1B instead of forcing him into the OF back in 2022. Let him continue to make loud contact and develop a natural power stroke in the minors while Goldschmidt and Pujols played out their contracts in St Louis.

I guess we'll never know, but JW is 23 and I'm pulling for him. Hopefully he can put together a productive September to get some momentum rolling towards 2026.

Walker’s best skill/tool is the fact that he’s “only 23”.

By the way, Dylan Carlson is only 26…
