Or, what's the purpose of coming back? He's been horrible all year. He sucked last year. He's getting worse because he's old.
IF healthy, maybe re-establish some trade value

I’m not a doctor and have zero inside info on his condition and how it is impacting him at the plate?
The Cards are on the hook for 2 years and $37M.
If they want to deal him in the offseason:
A) Sit him out and then try to deal him?
B) Play him and if he still gets hurt then try to deal him?

Between a rock and a hard place.
The only way he establishes ANY trade value is to play him and cross your fingers that he doesn’t re-injure himself.

I'll not call myself great on MLB budgets.

I think there a lot of value in turning NA into a $10-$12 million/year player for the receiving
team, taking back a RP or 2, or A level prospects and moving on. Still cuts the payment in half
for that player.

Nolan Arenado has been sidelined since Aug. 1 with a right shoulder strain. He has started a strength and conditioning program at the Cardinals’ spring training complex in Jupiter, Fla., but has not resumed baseball activity. He is expected to meet with the team on Monday, when the Cardinals begin a three-game road series against the Miami Marlins.

Opti
No reason to bring him back this season.

Nolan was having a decent season until the last week of June, hitting .251 .313 .405 .718 and playing strong defense.

After that his defense was not the same and he hit .183 .230 .232 .462 as the Cardinals began losing games left and right.

Yes
If the Cards could as you suggested:
Save $20/$24M
And
Recoup something decent in return they would pass the balance along in a heartbeat.

Problem becomes working around the NTC which I would think has been a sticking point?

He was playing worse than his age.

Someone else posted month ago or so, that Mo likely screwed this up himself by not trading Fedde and Helsley in the off season and thus helping NA realize he would be be better off somewhere else. Also now realizing one was his golfing partner, seems Mo did really screw up by not trading Helsley to give him a shove out the door.

Which was clearly not a good thing. I hate the "gamer" attitude when all you're doing is playing worse than any potential replacement and especially if you're blocking a potential future asset of the team for your own selfish reasons.
