That's a good story about Rickey. He had his own world view.

No. Not at all. Go out of town on business, get your expenses covered.
yeah, come on...people making millions of dollars need meal money?...the lowest paid players in baseball make more than 10 times the average wage...this made sense back when players had to work in the off season but today it is ridiculous
I just can’t get worked up over meal money, especially when CEOs get expenses covered and they’re buying bottles of Silver Oak. Not all players are making unreal money. Call someone up from Memphis and make them pay for breakfast at a 5 star hotel in NYC?

I travel 80-90 night per year.
Airfare, rental cars, hotels, meals, and expenses are all provided.
Standard stuff in most industries.
Why should it be any different for players and employees of a sports team?
Yebbut they get to play a kid's game everyday.

True....but I am enough of a realist to know that the level at which they play that kid's games is far more difficult than what I do for a living....

No offense, but if you're on the computer to post this, why not just Google "how much do the MLB players get for meal money?"
Puzzles me, but no big deal.

True that. You don't have a few million people scrutinizing every move you make on the field and then hollering, "throw the bum out!"

Yes I could have looked it up , but about everything that is put on cards talk could be looked up, it’s about the interaction, that’s what cards talk is for.

Reminds me of the great HOF goalie Jacques Plante who once said, “How would you like it if you were in your office, made a mistake, and a big red light comes on and 16,000 people boo and call you a bum!?!?”

Yeah, no joke. Plus a lot of these guys already got a huge payday when they were drafted. I don't care of they get meal money, no skin off my nose, but to act like these guys are struggling is silly!

ramfandan wrote: 09 Aug 2025 00:20 am As for MLB umpires , they each receive $340 per diem . Those dollars cover their hotelm food expenses and other incidentals.
Their local transportation to the ballpark from hotel is also covered.
MLB umpires also stay in 4 & 5 star hotels usually in downtown areas of major cities.
When umpires fly from city to city for each series, they sit in 1st class for seats . Umpires do their own bookings and flights but MLB gives them recommendations on hotels and airlines. (Sure that MLB gets a fine corporate rate at the ritzy hotels they stay at )

Umpires typically fly separate from teams to maintain impartiality.

Umpires get 4 paid weeks of vacation each season . Also 401K plan
Starting umpires earn $150,000 ranger per year . Crew chiefs , most experienced ones make between $350,000 to $450,000 per year.

Bonuses are paid if they earn postseason playoff games (based on their ratings )
If you ump in the first round of playoffs, you make between $5,000 to $10,000 per round. IF they work the League Championship Series and World Series, their total playoff bonuses can reach the $20,000 to $30,000 range.
If umpires are only getting $340 per day and it is to cover their hotel, meals and other incidentals, that is not necessarily even covering everything. You suggested their transportation is covered separately. Staying at almost any decent hotel in a downtown area these days is going to be at least $200 per night, if not more. In New York, good luck getting a hotel for under $500 per night. I had an offer to play in an event a month or so ago back in New York City and I couldn't find a place under $400 I would have let my dog stay at much less me staying there. If you have the hotel do your laundry service, that is going to cost you about $20 per each days clothes change, if not more. These guys are not exactly going to have time to go to some local laundry mat. So while those figures might sound generous, in fact, they are just barely getting by, if that. Travelling as much as the umpires do is a hard job. They are earning every penny of the money they get.

True story. We got per diem in the military for our travels. Most know the rate. Check this out. Most soldiers would spend less than the per diem and try to save a few bucks. That meant Holiday Inns and burgers.

My boss taught me a trick. Spend the per diem. Then add about 20 more dollars to room, and suddenly you’re staying at the Ritz. Living the high life. For 20 dollars more.
