43 more games = 8 more Mikolas starts.
... recalculating ...
Ha. Clever. Recalculate.

If they do, the threshold of "playoff contender" will be officially meaningless.

If you're 4 games out on Labor Day you're in the hunt. Does this team have the starting itching though to make that type of push? Very hard to see it.

Let's ask Joaquin Andujar:
"There is
one word in America that says it all, and that one word is, '
You never know',"

NY Mets are in 3rd WC spot with 52 losses
Reds have 55
SFG have 57
and STL have 58 losses .
At 58-58 , the Cardinals have 46 games remaining .
Currently the Mets are on a pace of .548 win percentage . That would equal 89 wins (rounding up from 88.776) for 162 games.
If 89 is the magic number , Cards would need to go 31 wins & 15 losses.
Are the Cardinals capable of finishing at a .674 clip in their final 46 games ?? .. slightly better than 2 of every 3
that's gotta be a rhetorical question, right?

31-15????
This reminds me of many on CT predicting sweeps or near sweeps of the Pirates, Braves and Rockies. Now what actually happened? 0-3,1-2, 1-2.
There is not enough talent on offense or in the rotation.

We got Cubs who are four back, and Yanks who are 6.5 back. Great time to be spoiler.

Only thing that I could see remotely boosting their chances would be if Mikolas gets removed from the rotation and Wetherholt gets called up around August 14/15th and he continues hitting. But I won’t get my hopes up about him hitting the world on fire when he gets called up.

No they can’t win the WC, too many holes in roster
But the last 7-8 weeks is about finding out the core moving forward
Who stays for 2026.

yeah, a lot would have to go perfectly.
Offense would need to all get hot a tthe same time.
Wetherholt would need to come up and be on fire. Also someone like Quinn Matthews would need to come up and pitch lights out during the stretch. It's not impossible, but it's highly unlikely.

Fan Graphs give Cards 5% chance to make WC, Reds and Giants 10%
I don’t see an epic collapse from Mets or Padres this year, their pitching is too good and deep

Can they - sure.
Will they - less likely.
But if we do, we've proved we can beat the Dodgers in a 3 game series, in LA no less. So going for the playoffs and actually trying to win is a fine goal.
It also might help if we can get everyone healthy at the same, plus add JJW after Aug 15th or so. Wouldn't it be something if he lit the spark that carried us into October?
