Because it is long past due, that’s why.
Because the sexist walls continue to crumble. And that’s something to celebrate.

What has taken so long is my question ?

The NBA has 8 full-time women officials and the NFL now has 3 female officials. MLB is far behind those two sports.

Jen Pawol will work the bases for Sat. doubleheader and the behind the plate for Sunday game.
Based on how umpires rotate clockwise , she should be at 2nd base for 1st game of DH, and then go to 1st for the nightcap ... then home plate Sunday.

Pawol, 48, was an all-state soccer and softball player in high school in New Jersey. She went on to play Division I softball at Hofstra, then played for the women’s national baseball team. She began umpiring NCAA softball games in 2010 and five years later enrolled in the minor league umpire training academy in Vero Beach, Fla., the first step toward a career in professional baseball.

She has been in AAA most recently. Pawol has worked MLB spring training games

To point out how long past overdue , the NBA hired their first woman official in 1997, MLS in 1998 , and the NFL hired line judge Shannon Eastin in 2012 . Only the National Hockey League has no women officials according to a story I read .

Ok. But who really cares if an umpire is a man or woman? They are best when you don't even notice them at all.

There won’t be any challenges because we all know that a woman is never wrong.

(Just kidding. I’m happy for her and it’s long overdue.)

Oh sure, things will be fine at first. But when a pitcher doesn't get a call on the outside corner he'll ask the ump "what's wrong with that?" The male up will say "it was off the plate" or "it was low." The female up will say "nothing. it was fine." And the poor sap will never get another call all night.

If she is a good fair ump then that's all that matters.
To be fair, I've seen none of that in this thread.
But then some of the dimmer bulbs have not yet weighed in.
It only took until the very next post for it to start!

Big deal. She will either be good or bad. Either way she will be treated differently because she is a woman. Live with it.

Hopefully, unlike several of the guys, she will know the difference between a ball and a strike. Time will tell.

Ok. But who really cares if an umpire is a man or woman? They are best when you don't even notice them at all.
Apparently, many people cared.
