100% Hererra's catching days are over unless it's an emergency situation.

I first suggested moving him to the OF last season, that and DH are where he belongs.

Great move last night, get him comfortable and then have J. Jay work w/him all winter and next spring.

Seems like yet another C. Bloom move to me.

How does a fella progress as far as being called up to MLB as a catcher……and he can’t throw???
Don’t you figure this out in A ball??
The little league like decisions made by this org are truly baffling.

They had no catching instructors in the minors when that assessment was done. Insane.

He can also play more games as OF
Primary catchers even if not injured need more rest
Day games after night games often .. no doubleheader rainouts etc

You figure Yadi would have noticed and reported deficiencies in Herrera's catching/throwing abilities during the times he spent with him in camp.

It is interesting to me that whenever asked, Herrera states he'd like to be a catcher, but he is willing to play wherever the team asks him to play. I like his passion about being a catcher, but his limitations may see to it that he never catches again. Or, that passion may push him to put in the work behind the plate and improve. Either way, I want his bat in the lineup.

Right. Certainly by AAA the brain trust realizes he can’t throw. Another indictment on the Cardinals allowing their minor league system to fall behind.

You require a Catching Instructor to determine if a guy has an arm???? The scouts, coaches, and managers were unable to ascertain he can’t throw to 2b???
AOF, if this is true……this org has turned into a version of Major League and a movie should be made ::crazya:: ::crazya::

Im not sure its fully cant throw as.much as catch ball from bad position and pop into throwing stance.

Now i would think it would actually be harder in minors ciz minor league pitchers might be wilder, but maybe in lower minors theres more fastballs, less movement on some garbage pitchers pitches so its easier. I dont know

I haven't heard that (but may have missed it).

I realize he has had a couple injuries, so they have been DHing him. I also realize putting him in the OF might open up the DH spot for others (Burleson and Gorman).

But if we haven't given up on him as a C, then why not give him the rest of season as the primary C? If they aren't satisfied, then we know going into the offseason that he will need to be the DH or in the OF.

I am just a little confused on the Cardinals plan for him or their position on the matter.
They found out early on he wasn’t going to be a catcher. If they thought he had he had a chance at sticking they would have kept catching him in the runway season so they pivoted to see if pages could be the catcher and they’re now realizing he’s not the guy either
Crooks and Bernal are coming. If Rainiel Rodriguez can field the position, he is on their heels.

This year somehow Pozo is contributing as a backup and RH punch hitter.

The cardinals are loaded with catchers in the system with good bats and hopefully better defense.

Herrera was not going to stick long term at catcher. If he doesn't play another position, they have to trade him.

Pages is on the bubble next year.
So you think this move is because the Cardinals have fully given up on him back there and not to protect him from injury, since they need his bat?
Yes. They don't want Herrera long term at catcher. Just like Contreras. If he could be the backup, great. Pozo took that role away. Other catchers are coming up even next year.

They like Herrera's bat and that's why he is here. Rightly so.

But they shuffle DH to give other hitters a break from the field. DH only players are not what the Cardinals do.

Roster construction is an issue. How many primarily DH players can you have? WC is the primary 1B for 2 more years. Gorman at 3B? Burleson in the OF? JJ will be the 2B.

Herrera's gotta be able to play in the field somewhere. Regardless trades should happen if they actually decide who they want to keep.

That's what I think. He can throw some , but not good at the pop up and throwing thingy, which isn't easy btw, but we shall see.

He's a bat first catcher. Never heard of that? Or a defense first catcher?

I don't think he "can't throw". I don't recall SBs being an issue until last season.
