......the Cards trade Donavan, Herrera or Burleson. These guys are cost controlled and are a solid foundation for the future. All 3 have exceptional bat to ball skills and Donavan and Burleson have proven reliable in the field.
As long as he is not behind the plate and can be moved to RF (as I have been correctly saying for 3 years), Herrera is worth keeping.
Donovan and Burleson are the best position players on the team not named Contreras or Winn - neither should be traded (instead, both should be extended).
Mootbaar is obviously the best trade piece - and yes, I have been correctly saying that for 3 years as well.
Could be worth considering a trade of Walker under the right circumstances - but perhaps too soon to be eager to pull the trigger.
Easy.
Obvious.
Correct.
How is Nootbaar “the best trade piece”?
He has proven himself to be what you, me, and many others have said - way overhyped and nothing special.
And per usual he’s hurt.
You’re not getting much for him.

And I do so in a tone and tenor which is kinder and more gracious than may be deserved.
This post being but one example of that high standard to which I hold myself.
Me being 100% correct for 3+ years that Mootbaar will never be what many hoped and dreamed of is simply a fully accurate analysis of the player and the game.
Me being 100% correct for the past 3 seasons that the best thing for Herrera's career would be to move to away from the catcher spot is simply a fully accurate analysis of the player and the game.
Both of those perfect and accurate assessments are simply the CORRECT BASEBALL ANALYSIS.
I am always and only about the game.
Never about me.
And I am always a bit disappointed when others attempt to make it so.
But, that is your choice.
Not mine.

He is the best piece because removing him from the equation instantly makes the team better because STL has better choices already on hand.
Whatever return he brings - particularly if packaged - is a bonus.
Had they done as I advised the past 3 years, his value may have been higher and the team would be better off now.
Mo's failure to do as I advised is not something I can fix.

Hererra 100 % not going anywhere (and the offer would have to be a major league player of high quality to land Donny, NO prospects).
Other than that, any player on the roster is fair game.
while I agree that no player is off limits, there's a few that are just as close as it gets. it would take a trade so bad that the opposing GM would get fired. these include Donny, Winn, JJ and Herrera
Agreed (but Hererra is going nowhere).
Didn't mention JJW or Doyle since they're not here and of course untouchable.

I’m not familiar with that contract…
Donovan is going to be 30 at the end of his current deal…..
At his age, he’s probably going to get only one shot at a big bucks free agent deal….
Doesn’t mean he won’t end up in Stl…..but giving it a shot is the best business move…

Donovan’s OPS has been dropping pretty good. Since June 1st he’s hitting .245 with a .323 OBP and .697 OPS. He’s what he always has been which is a solid player but nobody you build a team around. If the Dodgers or Yankees want to overpay for him then you do it in a heartbeat.

Mootbaar should have been traded long ago (as I alone first understood and advised) and having failed to do so up to this point the Cardinals should rectify their mistake.
Herrera should have been moved to a new position long ago (as I alone first understood and advised) and having failed to do so up to this point the Cardinals appear ready to attempt to rectify their mistake.
Simple as that.

But it would be idiocy to trade him before making a serious effort to extend.
Certainly the club should pursue it…..if they don’t trade him…..
but this close to free agency, he could be leaving a lot of money on the table..
Then there is the matter of age…….do they offer him 5/6 years? He would be 34, a big contract….can you say Arenado?
But if they offer him three, of course he will pursue a big free agent deal…
These issues are why I advocate for trading him for youth…..all the uncertainty I note above goes away, and they receive players under team control for much longer
