Every single contract a team signs - whether with Weatherholt, Walker, Goldschmidt, Arenado, etc. - is a risk-reward gamble. You are never going to "win" all of them. 1. Starting position players who are at least going to be the LH hitting side of a platoon at their position
2. Starting pitchers
3. Closers
If you don't project a player to be one of those things right now, you don't need to make extending them a priority.
Of course. JJ is the only one (pre-Doyle) that I'd consider such. The significant downside is losing the great players after 6 years.
