Best I can relate is when my 95 Ford got stolen and painted white. I had it for 13 years.

We have had a lot of rescue dogs over the years, and in recent years cats in need have found us. We now have 4! I never thought I was a cat person before but I love them all.
I tell people the best gift you can give your furry friend is to be with them when they pass on. It's not always possible but it is worth the effort. I seems your cat gave you that final gift. What a blessing. It hurts when they go as they leave a hole in your heart, but think instead of the friendship you had with him.

I understand the sense of loss, believe me.

I had a Maine Coon. He used to tap me on the shoulder to let me know he was coming in for a landing. Big but gentle. Very quiet. Then at age 7 his life started slipping away. Nothing the vet could do except jack him up on steroids, which made him move though he should not have. On his last day as he struggled to crawl away he meowed for the first time. It was such a beautiful sound and then he gave up the ghost.
We couldn't live without a cat but we got two sister kittens from a rescue operation. It helps a lot.

Sibling kittens rule. I am on my third pair over 40 years.
To honor my state of birth, I named them Harry and Bess.
Although Bess is a lot better looking than her namesake:)

First I want to say, you all are beautiful people. Reading many of these posts has gotten me quite choked up, not gonna' lie. I had my cat Frank, who'd had diabetes for a year or so, die in my lap on the way to the vet a few years ago. He was a beautiful creature, loved him dearly. I buried on a hill overlooking the Mississippi in JB Park, with a jumbo shrimp(his favorite food), a guitar string(cause he used to like to floss with it, lol), and, my fluffy bathroom robe(that he loved to nap on). Broke my heart, very sad, but, he was really suffering bad. Them little guys can really bring out the best in us, teach us a lot about life. I'm kinda' (bleep) proud of this board, at the moment. Life is beautiful!

Sounds like your friend found comfort with you in his/her last moments. You must’ve given a good life that many animals never get. Sorry for your loss.

Best wishes. Pets are cherished family matters and their losses are hard. Sounds like you loved him to the last and he was with you at the end, which is very important to your pet. Your cat sounds like he lived a long and loved life and he finished it right where he wanted to, next to you. We have always taken a couple of months before getting our next dog. I can't imagine living without one. I wish you the best.

We sure have some awesome pet owners on CT.
We recently took in our first indoor cat, and she's pretty hilarious. Today a male cardinal who comes often onto our outdoor porch where the outdoor cats are fed came banging on one of our windows as he often does. Idk if he's looking for a way in or just wants some more cat food put out on the porch. Anyway, she stealthily snuck up and jumped at the window. Think she would have got him if not for the glass.
To get a cat to 16 years old is amazing Adam, so you must have taken great care of her, and sorry for your loss.
Our outdoor cats are lucky to make it out of kittenhood with all the predators, cars, you name it, as they often just disappear. 4 out of our 5 outdoor cats are wild but come up almost every day. If they don't tame up, their lives are likely to be pretty short which is just the reality. For anybody that dumps cats out thinking they'll do well on their own, you're fooling yourself. At least take them to a shelter.
Wasn't sure how our declining 18 yr. old dog would take to the new indoor cat, but he tolerates her just fine and she seems to love him, so no problems.

We have lost a lot of dogs and cats over the years. I like to think of them as family, they give unconditional love that you often don't find from other people. Lost our last dog, an English Bulldog several years ago. I was depressed for a while, but I often reflect on what a great dog Harley was. I am not a cat person, but we had a cat as our sole pet for years and lost her to stomach cancer. That was a great pet, an inside/outside cat, and a fantastic mouser. Hang in there, it gets better.

Long story. I have always disliked cats. We had a farm where a feral tomcat showed up and stayed. He was huge. We didn't feed him, touch him, ... He was a great mouser and we would see him catch mice and birds all of the time. One day, while putting hay in the barn, I was sitting on a hay wagon trying to cool down. Out of nowhere, this cat came along, rubbed against my leg, and then hopped up on the wagon and crawled into my lap. I was frozen. I have seen what this cat did to other cats. Everyone else cracked up but told me not to move. For whatever reason, that cat continued to do that whenever I was in the barn. Finally, I gathered enough courage to pet it. Heck, he didn't even have a name. We had to sell the farm, but told the new owners that this cat came with the property. They didn't want a cat and were not going to live on the property, so we agreed that my wife and I would check up on him and take care of him. Taking care of him consisted of parking the truck, putting down the tailgate, and getting out a few treats. The next three years, we stopped by to see "cat." He was already a few years old when he showed up at the farm. We knew he was getting up in years. One day, he didn't show up when we pulled down the lane. The wife and I continued to go over to see if cat would show up. He didn't. We don't know what happened to him, but I would bet that he passed away. I miss that cat. I am sorry for your loss.

Pets that have been with you for years are almost like family. I have been in your shoes.

So sorry for your loss.
I have had to put down my big boy pyrenees several years ago and it took alot out of me. I told myself I would never have another pet but I adopted a rescue mutt. I had her for about 10 years than she suddenly took I'll and passed laying next to me.
Again I said never again then I was asked if I would take a 5 year old shepherd that owner could no longer care for her. So here I am 2 years later attached to my shadow and just enjoying the time my wife, myself and her share together
I hope for you the best during your difficult time.
