Iowa bird wrote: 07 Jul 2025 10:57 am Counsell hasn’t won anything without Pat Murphy by his side. Murphy’s been the real leader of the Brewers for years. Didn’t look like the Brewers and Murphy missed Counsell last year.
Let’s see how the season plays out. Milwaukee has a payroll half that of the Cubs, but they’re right on their tail.
There are people who crunch numbers that will tell us that over the 162
that the decisions that managers make may only have a 4 or 5 game impact
over that 162 season. If we look at the list of HOF managers it supports the premise
to some extent. HOFers yes, but they had both good and bad runs. Some have less than
a .500 record.

What I don't think gets captured well is the culture of the dugouts, the teaching
of what it takes to win, knowing how to win when the stars align and you have
a chance at a ring for a division, or pennants, and WS. Comparing managers in any
single season does not do much. IMO Counsel does know what it takes to win. He knows
what he wants in a team, may not work out, we will disagree with his choices at times, but
the culture and path are there.

On a team that needs those attributes. Getting players to a point of being big leaguers not
just acting like one, I think those attributes at manager and the coaches are very important.

The ESPN announcers were talking about the two org's last night during the game and the directions they've taken. Cubs have taken off hiring a real manager, drafting well, and signing key FAs for pitching. Mozo on the other hand has hired a yes man, dumpster dove on pitching, and has no clue how to establish a team. Oli tries to be the players' best friend. Need to draw that line. Hopefully Chiam Bloom hires his own manager, a real one who can truly manage, and starts drafting impact players. My fear is that players won't want to sign here in FA due to the ownership and how cheap they are and the lack of direction from Mozo and Oli as the manager. People wanted to play for TLR. I can't see them wanting to play for a yes man. That obviously scared Francona away when he interviewed after TLR retired and the Cards went with Matheny whom they could control.

The camera caught Marmol sitting there smiling in the dugout more than once for no apparent reason while his team was getting obliterated on the field. And that kind of attitude leads to players like Contreras joking around with PCA at 1B with the score 11-0. Leaders need to lead.

Their demeanor in the dugout couldn't be any more vast.
Counsell is a legit MLB manager...The marmot isn't...doesn't get more vast than that.
