There are some bad teams but...

2004 Cardinals 105 wins
2005 Cardinals 100 wins
2006 Cardinals 83 win + world series champions.

Worst team in the history of baseball to win the world series 2006 Cardinals.
Cards got healthy at the right time and had a cy young caliber ace a hall of fame manager hall of fame pitching coach MVP hall of fame 1st baseman hall of fame catcher hall of fame third baseman Jim Edmonds in center it’s not even a realistic comparison of the two teams unless you’ve been drinking heavily and it’s drunk logic
The team won 83 games. Next season 2007 with Pujols, Molina, Rolen and Edmonds they had a losing season. Two pitchers with five wins apiece during the season won a game in the WS. They are in fact the with the lowest win total in the history of baseball to win a WS. I seriously doubt this team will do that but just because they are mediocre doesn't mean it's time to throw in the towel.

It's true, and it was fun at the time, but the aftermath has had a terrible effect on the team's standards and approach to roster building. They saw it happen once so they know it CAN happen- never mind that it is unlikely. It's baked into the formula now. Just get in and anything can happen. What an awful approach.
Better get used to it. Cardinals have a poor TV deal and mediocre attendance. They can't afford to absorb big contracts now.

Okay keep believing this team will win the World Series because a team with multiple hall of fame players and a hall of fame manager won the World Series we will revisit this thread at the end of the season and see if they win the World Series or you are just talking out of your (donkey). I think there are too many wild card teams and the season is too long. They play 162 games and then a wild card team can win it all but the reality is we might make it as a wild card team. Then it's a new season.

Since they expanded to 2 wild card teams in 2011 28% of world series champions have been wild card. Since expanding to 3 wild card 50%. Previously only 1 wild card team had an opportunity to advance. 1 against 3. Now 2 wild card teams have a chance to advance.

I don't deny that this is how they operate. I'm saying it's a very poor strategy. I'm also saying that what happened in 2006 has given them cover to operate this way. And, of course, fans still cite it.

Same hall of famers on the team in 2007 that posted a losing record. We'll see. Currently on pace to win 85 which would beat 2006 and 20007.

If I can’t afford something, then I don’t buy it or engage in it. It would be awful if our favorite billionaire continued to play the ”game” with half a wallet. His ROI on the Cardinals is astronomical. Good time to sell if he can’t afford to be a player anymore.

I suspect given the new format the top 2 division winners over time will have a major advantage with the first round bye allowing the players time to recover a little from the 162 game grind. MLB really needs to shorten the regular season. Baseball wasn't designed to be played into early November.

In theory with the opportunity for 2 wild card teams to advance to the division series there might be more wild card teams in the world series but still a big disadvantage.

Of course the conventional retort would be rested teams lose their edge. Wild card teams, though weary, are sharper.

It is simple reality. The Cardinals are now in the same position as a lot of other teams with a poor TV deal. There are no impoverished MLB owners. They get rich by being smart with their money. At the moment aside from Gray the players with no trade deals aren't playing up to the money they are making. I can see DeWitt adding a player or two in the offseason but unlikely we get to top ten payroll.
