I don't mean to be grouchy about it, but there's very few players here that I'm excited for at an all-star level. Contreras probably started too cold to garner any support, and as much as I cannot STAND the guy, Alonso is clearly the guy this year.

Donovan's a nice player, all credit to him, but when I think of him, I don't think ALL STAR! I think, yep, he's a nice table setter of a player. The kind of player who makes a good team great, but not a star.

There's no way Winn sniffs the game, not when he's in a league with Lindor and EDLC, though, in Winn's case, I think it says more about the current crops of shortstops than it does Winn's talent. It's just a loaded position.

Arenado doesn't belong. We all know this.

And definitely not anybody from the outfield.

It's been a problem for a few years now, but there's no player on the team, hitting or pitching, that's a stand-out. We don't have a player right now that you can point to and say "HIM. That guy is the team." You know?

I think Donny should be 1st and Winn at 10 is a travesty! Donny probably will be picked!

I think the players (maybe coaches too) did the voting back then.
You're right. Managers got a vote too. I mainly wanted an excuse to post the picture.

As an aside, that 1963 AS game was Musial's last.

60 years ago men were men and voters knew their duty.

I think the players (maybe coaches too) did the voting back then. As I recall JJ was added as a replacement. Maybe another one as well. It was cool though seeing them as the starting NL infield. The All Star game was a really big deal back in those days.
Yes, from 1958 until 1970 the managers, coaches, and players picked the all star roster.

Javier replaced Bill Mazeroski, who was injured.

I saw the All Star voting last night and viewed it as a somewhat shocking reality wakeup call.

Cardinals really are that far behind in MLB talent.

I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily they are that far back in MLB talent, but they are that far back in fan base enthusiasm.

Contreras: 8th among NL 1B/T-5th in fWAR among NL 1B and climbing
Winn: 10th among NL SS’s/6th in fWAR among NL SS’s
Donovan: 4th among NL 2B’s/1st in fWAR among NL 2B’s
Herrera: 7th among NL DH’s/4th in fWAR among NL DH’s

Ketel Marte missed a month because of injury but despite having 100 fewer PAs than Donovan he's matched or exceeded his counting stats and he's way ahead on rate stats. Marte is slugging 550 and he's walked more often than he's struck out, which amazes me. I like Donovan a lot but give me Ketel.
