brock118 wrote: 09 Jun 2025 20:31 pm I knew there would be some growing pains with him at 1B and he's been decent. But someone please show him how to stretch correctly and stop coming off the base early. He seems to stretch in a nonlinear way from the throw too often and jumps or comes off the base too easily.
You are a dumb (donkey)
Watch when he stretches for throws more closely.
3rd in all of MLB, for 1b, in outs above average.

You're a jack (donkey)
Outs above average measures the players range mostly. Not how he digs balls out or stretches correctly. But you already knew that.
Then show your facts. I know you have nothing.
I already said opposing announcers have said the same thing. Go back and rewatch every game by opposing announcers and you will hear it. I know you must have the time.
You have nothing. Thanks for proving it.

It's a fair criticism, but we also cannot ignore that there's been very little defensive drop off from Goldschmidt at first base.

I'm not sure it's a footwork problem, either. Contreras just isn't' a big dude. He's listed at 6-1. Whatever the case, I'm still glad he's on first. Double so since his bat is coming back around.

11 straight games with at least one RBI!

This is a great thread, one of the best on CT.

Contreras shows just how low the Cardinals standards and expectations have been lowered. Surely Bloom will remake this roster when he takes over.

Sooooo... he doesn't stretch the way you like him to? Does it look awkward to you?

WTF cares. His stretch has been just as effective as any 1B's stretch. He isn't built like a typical 1B, thus his stretch doesn't look as long-legged as others. But it gets it done. He has been a + fielder.

Move on.

Yeah, the horrah of a top defensive 1b who is also an RBI machine and a team leader

This is another Shady sock, created yesterday. He's having a hissy fit because Contreras is blocking Burleson at first. Since he was the only one who feels that way he created an imaginary friend to agree with himself.

I honestly have noticed this but I'm going to pay closer attention.

But all-in-all we have to be very pleased w/WillyC's defense at first base which is well above league average.

Contreras has been much better defensively than I expected. He may be a better first baseman than catcher.

Kinda funny how some were worried over the 1B defensive drop off with Golds going elsewhere. There'd be more infield errors b/c no way the replacement would do as well as Goldy on bad throws. I bought into that possibility some, but C's have to learn high velo short hops with an awkward glove early on to survive behind the dish. Self preservation to some degree.
Anyway, Contreras has better defensive numbers than Goldy in his first real regular chance at the 1B position. I wouldn't have predicted that.
He's been great over there, and can really stretch out well for an ex C and his body type. Sure, as time goes by I'd expect him to learn to do it even better, but it's NOT a current problem ......... as long as he doesn't pull a hammy while doing it, as at my age it hurts to watch and imagine trying to do similar, lol.
Heck, he might be in the GG convo later on. Does any other 1B have his arm on relay throws?

There is absolutely no doubt that this is Shady! I reported the sock to the moderators...we'll see if they take action.

Shady is too stupid to fool anyone!
Only Shady would criticize the way Contreras stretches and then say it's the other team's announcers saying it.

What a dunce!
