Pujols wasn’t an elite player. He is arguably top five ever. Huge difference.
We will never see another Albert.
In fact surrounded by semi elite- Molina Edmonds Scotty etc.

They, also, tried to get Stanton, Price and Heyward. Thank goodness that didn't happen.Jatalk wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 06:56 amAgree with you. The truly elite are rare and with current salary structure in baseball chances of playing for Cards is not likely, unless rises through organizational ranks.
In some ways management has tried to provide us with such players with Arenado and Goldy. But obviously they were and are disappointments.
Re: I miss having an elite player in their prime
Pujols wouldn’t even have counted then for us because he never re-signed with us after he was FA eligible.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 08:59 amYeah, that part was pretty important to the substance of my thought.
Trout wouldn’t count either since he also never signed after he was eligible for FA. Judge would count though.
Most players don’t go through FA though and then end up back with their teams. Judge, Holliday, and Kershaw (although he was older and it was a formality pretty much) did that. Not sure who else.

Re: I miss having an elite player in their prime
Semantics. You understand my premise, yet are trying to be obtuse. Players who sign long term extensions foregoing free agency are the same as a player staying with their original team after being FA eligible. Must be rewarding to always be right on an anonymous site. Enjoy!Futuregm2 wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 09:06 amPujols wouldn’t even have counted then for us because he never re-signed with us after he was FA eligible.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 08:59 amYeah, that part was pretty important to the substance of my thought.

Well then my post I put initially works because all of those players signed long term deals foregoing free agency with the same team. So you didn’t need to reply the way that you did.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 09:17 amSemantics. You understand my premise, yet are trying to be obtuse. Free Agency will bring that Cardinal huge offers by the big market teams that he won't turn down . SO no more enjoying a guy for the 10 years you mentioned. It's 1 to 6 years and then adios !

Wow. Pretty thin skin if you got your feelings hurt over this reply. If you are that sensitive, you will have a tough time ever being a GM. Even a GM of Starbucks!Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 08:59 amYeah, that part was pretty important to the substance of my thought.
Also, you listed a ton of players in their 2,3, and 4 years. Those players don't fit the criteria yet of being generational talent. Darryl Strawberry, Eric Davis, Don Mattingly, Cody Bellinger, Grady Sizemore, Strasburg, Lincecum, Kris Bryant, to name a few are guys that could've been but faded for various reasons.

Your list contains some household names. You say faded. Some of these were pretty good for 4-5 years.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 09:25 amWow. As to the height of their greatness I’d say simple attrition may be in play.

SBD I agree they were all (bleep) good! Bu they were not generational HOF level because they either got injured, regressed quickly after their prime years, or for another reason specific to each.sikeston bulldog2 wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 09:28 amYour list contains some household names. Honestly all those moves I thought were great moves. None were the talent level of Albert but supposedly big talents. It’s almost like the organization is jinxed.thetank2 wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 09:05 amThey, also, tried to get Stanton, Price and Heyward. I hear ya. Maybe age. Maybe drugs. You would expect a decline after a period of greatness. It’s the depth or degree of the fall that becomes the focus.Basil Shabazz wrote: ↑03 Jun 2025 09:32 amSBD I agree they were all (drat) good! the point is....if a player wants to leave...it's not a matter of the club "letting" them
if he want to go...he can go

We have been doing the next best thing- we get elite players past their prime.
