It's very much a tournament. Every league has wildcards. Baseball was just slower than the rest to implement and expand them. NCAA (which at this point are just lower-level pro leagues) have wildcards too and we consider it great.
The "purists" are the minority. Wildcards aren't a dirty word.
Get healthy. Get hot. Get in. Make your run. No one cares about or remembers division championships if they don't come with a league pennant and\or world series title.
NHL doesn't have wildcards

What kind of a hockey fan are you? I don’t even follow hockey much and I know there are wild cards.

Tied with the Gigantes for wild card
Most people look at the wild card as a losers last chance. A break. A mulligan.
Me . I look at it like a tournament where anything can happen.
2011 says Hi.
2006.
I think in 2006 the Cards 83-79 regular season record won the NLC division.
I was referring to anything can happen. Beat Mets, then Tigers. Both series underdogs, especially the Mets.
"Tigers in 3"

I'd say especially the Tigers. Remember "Tigers in 3" prediction?
