Re: Kyrou for Marner?
Trade a 35-goal guy with 5 or 6 years left on his deal for the rights to a pending UFA? Sure, that sounds reasonable!
That is so ridiculous that it can ONLY come from Leafs fans!

Re: Kyrou for Marner?
I'd be ok with signing Marner and trading Kyrou for something else but I'm not trading Kyrou to Toronto for a UFA

Well, you're right. Been playing along for entertainment value.Frank Underwood wrote: ↑22 May 2025 22:33 pm Trade a 35-goal guy with 5 or 6 years left on his deal for the rights to a pending UFA? Sure, that sounds reasonable!

The only way a sane Marner accepts a trade is if he wants to go somewhere specific and recognizes he can't unless salary comes back to Toronto to make room for him under the cap. The likelihood that is St. Louis . . .
Re: Kyrou for Marner?
I mean marner can accept a trade anywhere because hes not required to sign if they arent offering the money he wants and he will be free agent july 1st so trading for him is really quite pointless. I doubt marmer is gonna accept a lesser deal for a team just cuz they traded for his tempirary rights to neogotiate a contract early before july 1st. He will wamt his money regardless.DawgDad wrote: ↑22 May 2025 22:40 pmWell, you're right. This was my first thought when I saw this garbage.noted wrote: ↑22 May 2025 21:06 pmBerube does not want Kyrou and Kyrou does not want BerubePierre McGuire wrote: ↑22 May 2025 21:00 pm And if Army wants to deal and pay Marner the money I’m good with it. We lost in the first round without Marner…bottom line , he makes the Blues a better team. Playoffs still aren’t a lock for next year…Marner helps in that regard as well.
Marner comes up small in the playoffs. Hard pass.
Re: Kyrou for Marner?
Insane proposal. It’s not just a 1 for 1, it’s Kyrou and 5 mil off somewhere else

The only news that makes it sound halfway plausible is that Armstrong is said to be pursuing it. Haven't you heard? That guy has been known to do some very stupid moves.Frank Underwood wrote: ↑22 May 2025 22:33 pm Trade a 35-goal guy with 5 or 6 years left on his deal for the rights to a pending UFA? Re: Kyrou for Marner?
I don't like this idea.
First of all, Marner is a better player than Kyrou. Let's admit that.
But, Kyrou is a much better goal scorer. Marner defers. Almost always. This means he can't play with Thomas. I like the idea of using Schenn at 2C with Holloway as I think it's a reasonable short term solution and boosts Schenn's value, maximizing his performance. What iif Marner and Schenn don't click. Who's going to play 2C, or is Marner going to the third line?
At 14ish million for Marner, I'd much rather have Kyrou. While Kyrou wasn't a force in the playoffs, I thought he was fairly active in game seven and had several shots on net and a breakaway. Check Marner's games 5/6/7 playoff stats for his career. They're just as bad or worse than Kyrou's. That's while playing with better linemates.
I'd also be worried about blowing up our team salary structure.
If I'm trading Kyrou, it's for a young defenseman.

Re: Kyrou for Marner?
Mariner has a NMC until his contract runs out so he isn’t going anywhere unless he wants to.
Re: Kyrou for Marner?
His contract is over. He’s basically a UFA (and is officially one on 7/1/25)Bluesfan1978 wrote: ↑23 May 2025 08:46 am Mariner has a NMC until his contract runs out so he isn’t going anywhere unless he wants to.

Re: Kyrou for Marner?
I’m not positive but I’m pretty sure his NMC runs right till July 1st.
Re: Kyrou for Marner?
Correct. The scenario plays out like this . . .Bluesfan1978 wrote: ↑23 May 2025 08:51 am I’m not positive but I’m pretty sure his NMC runs right till July 1st.
-Marner talks to teams interested in signing him
-Marner decides which team he wants to sign with
-Said team trades for his rights from Toronto prior to July 1st
-That team can now sign him for 8 years instead of just 7 as a UFA
No team is trading for him without an agreed upon contract in place.

Re: Kyrou for Marner?
One caveat is that to get the 8 years it would have to be a sign-and-trade. You can only sign for 8 years with the team you were on at the trade deadline (in this case Toronto).rbirules wrote: ↑23 May 2025 09:12 amCorrect. But yeah this whole scenario hinges on Marner caring enough about getting the 8th year.
Re: Kyrou for Marner?
Yes, good correction. Toronto signs him to the agreed upon 8 year contract and trades him to the team of Marner's choosing.bluetunehead wrote: ↑23 May 2025 09:42 amOne caveat is that to get the 8 years it would have to be a sign-and-trade. Well some rando talked about it on a blog or podcast so now we have to have a thread here!!Frank Underwood wrote: ↑22 May 2025 22:33 pm Trade a 35-goal guy with 5 or 6 years left on his deal for the rights to a pending UFA? Sure, that sounds reasonable!
