Last night I watched every pitch and at-bat for the first time this season.
I came away with these observations/thoughts:
1 This is a much better team than I ever thought they would be this year.
2. The players all seem to be having fun - I know winning makes sports more fun but they do seem to want to be out there.
3. Pallante really showed me something - didn’t wilt in critical situations when game was close. He only made 1 bad mistake and didn’t let that get to him.
4. Bobby Witt Jr is a helluva player.
5. Scott II needs to read balls hit at him better.
6. I may have been completely wrong about Marmol. He’s got everyone pulling in the same direction and it certainly appears the players are buying in.
Apparently, we were all duped by Oli, or he's been replaced by a doppleganger. He used to constantly shuffle the entire lineup, sitting productive bats when most needed, pull starters way too early, and burn through bp arms like kindling.
He's stopped doing all 3 of those this season. For once, can't complain about him, and have no desire to. He's doing a helluva job so far.
I personally don't think Oli learned how to manage in the middle of the season. I'd suspect that whoever is on the other Ipad has changed.
The team is playing really good baseball right now. Oli gets credit for that, just like he gets blame when they suck, but I really don't think he's become TLR overnight.

He is still learning how to be a MLB CFer. has the tools to be great still very young. agree he needs to run more and be more aggressive. again still young and figuring things out.
agree about just now starting to watch whole games and studying the pitchers. don't forget in off-season seemed like mgt had thrown in the towel and was talking about rebooting franchise and didn't make needed improvements.
but this Defense is simply incredible. reminds one of Ossie, Tommy teams they are so good.
that play last night for the double play and getting the lead runner? perfection in a one run game.

5. Scott II needs to read balls hit at him better.
To be fair, that was the worst flub I've seen from Scott this year. And the shakiest he has looked all year over the course of a game. I tend to chalk it up to either a bad game or having trouble with lights in an unfamiliar stadium.
I'm also not sure anyone but for a couple guys in the league catch that ball he misplayed.
VSII
+6 DRS (2nd in MLB, +2 off the lead)
+5 OAA (3rd in MLB, +3 off the lead)
We have to keep in minds he's still earning the road parks, his reads will get better w/experience in those stadiums.
Thanks for the stats, he's been fantastic. One game and people want to make a judgement call. Odd.
Welcome Alex
The kids a stud, going to be in contention to win a GG one day.
People who's never played at a high level don't understand the difference between stadiums, the kids learning many new ones this season and the different wind currents, jet streams, backgrounds, ect.....
I have no issue w/VSII except I want him to run even more when he gets on base!
I know you don't and I know you do. I want him to run as much as heavenly possible.
How about that catch last night?
Only a handful of CF'ers in MLB make that play!

He’s absolutely freakish defensively. Best defender on this team.

NADO (still elite), Winn, Donny, VSII, Noot...............reminding me of Whitey's great defensive teams.
Even the non "elite" defensive players like WillyC, Pages and even Walker are all plus defenders!

Bomber titled the thread “Observations”, not “Judgements”. He prefaced his comments with a disclaimer about this being the first complete 2025 Cards game he’s watched. I understood his comments to be a snapshot of that game, not a panoramic view of the season.

Just a wild guess, but maybe he is answering to a different boss, Mo being a lame duck.
