What an A-Hole!
Ya… the Red Sox shamefully forgot to reinforce how players need to model themselves after Pete Rose.
Between the white lines, I'd want every player to play the game like Pete did...
Point is...when guys like Pete, Stan, Jackie Robinson, were asked to change positions for the good of the team, they did so without complaint because they were team first guys.

Couple more thoughts- I read the entry- Maybe he thinks the transition will hurt the team because he doest think he’ll do well at first. Or maybe he still wants to prove he belongs at third.

Even beyond players of past years, just look at a guy like Contreras. He was signed to be a catcher and a month into the contract the team was moving him off of catcher. Did he complain to the media? Did he throw a public hissy fit and say he wouldn’t be moving to another position? No, because he’s the kind of player you want on your team.

If you hold current ballplayers to the standards of Musial, everyone fails. The game is different now, and so are its internal/external mechanics.
I will add that even Musial refused to sign contracts the Cardinals offered him - twice.

Sure, but there are still many examples of players moving around the diamond and none of them going to the media and complaining about it. Some also had big contracts.
Fernando Tatis Jr. was a SS with a newly minted $300 million deal when the Padres moved him to RF
Willson Contreras was moved off of catcher a month after signing his deal. He never complained to the media about it or said he wouldn’t switch.
Mookie Betts has been moved from RF to 2B to SS, has he ever complained?
But Rafael Devers, who has led the league in errors for 7 straight years at 3B, is too good to be moved around for the betterment of the team.

If he is good for that many errors at home at 3b, maybe he makes twice as many in an unfamiliar place?
In all these examples, one issue is how did the team address it with the player? Maybe this guy just got told bluntly and shoved off 3rd and now payback to the management is a *&^^%. Or, maybe not, who knows. google says "teams perceived broken promises...." He has zero games listed at 1B in his MLB career..maybe he would rather be traded, does he have that right?
Also, who is the DH replacing him, that is a person that can't be expected to fill in at 1B as he is?

He already agreed to DH, and now they’re asking him to learn a new position after being told he wouldn’t be playing the field.
I’ve already said it’s a bad look… but let’s not assume that other players haven’t had similar feelings. This kind of thing should be handled internally. But the fact he’s making it public might suggest that something has gone wrong with the Red Sox communications…
I know it’s a popular sentiment that these guys are supposed to shut up and play when billion dollar teams shove wads of cash in their mouths. No grievances allowed.

Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers spoke to members of the media today, including Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Devers said that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow recently asked him about playing first base in the wake of the Triston Casas injury. Devers said that he is unwilling to take up the position, adding that the club told him to put away his glove when they moved him from third base to designated hitter this winter. He feels that the team has now gone back on its word. He also responded “Sí, claro” when asked if he was upset by the request.
“I know I’m a ballplayer,” Devers said, via translator, relayed by Speier, “but at the same time, they can’t expect me to play every single position out there. In break training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove, that I wasn’t going to play any other position but DH. So right now, I just feel like it’s not an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position.” Devers added this about Breslow, per Speier, “I’m not certain what (issue) he has with me. He played ball, and I would like to think that he knows that changing positions like that isn’t easy.” Speier relayed more from Devers: “Here in the clubhouse, thankfully, the relationship that I have with my teammates is great. I don’t understand some of the decisions that the GM makes. Next thing you know, someone in the outfield gets hurt and they want me to play in the outfield.” As for the first base spot, Devers seems to think an external addition is the answer, per Christopher Smith of MassLive: “Now I think they should do their job essentially and hit the market and look for another player (to play first base). I’m not sure why they want me to be in between the way they have me now.”
I guess Devers doesn't realize The Man happily played full MLB seasons at all three OF positions as well as first base? Or that Pete Rose played 2nd, third, first, and LF?

While he didnt play it often, pujols jumped to 3b for a few games whenever the cardinals or angels asked.

Pujols played 3B in the minors. The stretch was playing him in the OF.
Devers has never played 1B at any professional level. Only played 3B in the minors.

Weird that a player has to agree to switch like that, especially to DH, and then to 1B. Tatis Jr. had never played RF before he was switched there after he had already signed his $300 million extension as a SS. Was that a big deal? Then after moving him to RF they had the nerve to play him 7 games in CF! How dare they!
Mookie Betts has been switched many times, mid season even. In 2023 he played 107 games in RF, 70 at 2B, and 16 at SS. He hadn’t played SS in over a decade at the time.
Again, he isn’t the first player to go through this. He took it terribly and made himself look terrible in the process.

You could cite a thousand more examples of players changing positions, but I’d guess you won’t know how any of them felt about it.
I’m only suggesting that maybe Devers doesn’t need to be attacked for voicing his opinion. If the Red Sox didn’t have the sense to make it clear he might be changing positions at some point in his career, that’s on them.

Voicing an opinion...well...that's certainly one way to look at it.
Of course, another way would be to say a young man making $30 million a year is acting like an entitled, spoiled baby.

Al.ost every 3b has been able to transition to 1b just fine. Catchers play 1b without having played it befkre and do fine all the time.
Several 3b who were among the bottom of the league defensively went to 1b and were great defenders. Outfielders have transitioned as well. 1b is essentially an easy version of 3b although you receive more throws even though you have less liners hit to you and ypu dont throw as much
Devers could transition easuly. Hes just mad cuz he feels the front office wasnt fully truthful to him when they were pursuing bregman saying bregman would play 2b then blindsighted him that instead he would play 3b and raffy was getting kicked to dh telling him to put away his glove. So now hes refusing to help his team cuz hes mad at management.

Boston screwed him and now they are going to have to trade him. He signed to play 3b and that is what he wanted. He did not want to move off 3b for Bregman, but finally gave in. Now its move again, He wants to play 3B, he wont in Boston with AB there, so now is his chance to force a trade. Its just business. This is the front offices creation, not the players. Surprised no contract addendum out of position bonus has been offered etc, money sometimes cures things. But maybe his thing is , 3B.
