The interesting thing is this team leads baseball in doubles with 61. That’s something we’ve lacked for years. Also lead in IBB’s, which is kind of interesting. But, also tied for 2nd most in GDP’s. And still lack in HRs (T-21st) and tied for fewest in triples.

Cardinals: .263/.333/.397
Cubs: .260/.340/.444

Pretty similar avg/OBP, but Cubs kill us at SLG% and have almost double the steals, so they’ve scored 41 more runs than us. And they’ve hit into 18 less DP’s than our 26 8O
The doubles stat is great. But is it a lead off double hence stranded. Or an rbi double.

As for IBB I think they are setting up DP. Oli needs to see who they are skipping and focus on the hitter the other team chooses to pitch to. Gotta be a correlation.
Arenado leads baseball with 3 intentional walks and Nootbaar is 2nd on the team with 2.
Ok so the defense is targeting the 2 and 5 slots to pitch to. That’s Willy and ?

Who leads team in DP’s.

Sixties Dodger pitching may or may not be enough for this motley offense.

Contreras has hit into 6 DP’s, which amazingly is not the league lead even though he has almost as many as the whole Cubs team combined (8).

Next on the team is Nootbaar with 3, Herrera with 3 (in only 24 PAs), and Baker with 3. Walker/Burly/Nado/Donovan/Pages all have 2 a piece.

Arenado IBB’s were to get to Pages (March 31st) in the bottom of the 9th of a tie game and winning run on 2nd and 2 outs, no runner would score; Herrera (April 2nd) in the bottom of the 7th in a game we were tied 5-5 at the time and Contreras was on 3rd base with 1 out, no runner would score ; Walker (April 9th) in the top of the 12th inning in a tie game with runner on 3rd and 1 out, Walker singled in that AB scoring the go ahead run (although Pitt would tie and ultimately win).

the truth is the cards would be a competitive team if their young talent had played up expectation...if gorman and walker were both 850 OPS guys and herrera was healthy this would be a solid offense but sadly thus far these guys have been teases at times but havent put it together...I do hope walker isnt one of those guys who at 27 somehow wakes up and figures it out for another team

I was also looking at the Cards v Cubs stats this morning too and that run scored differential really shows our lack of HR power and SB's.

We've got almost the identical # of hits (265 v 264 favor the Cubs) but they've got 7 more triples to go along w/those 14 more HR's and 21 more SB's.

They create runs w/both their booming bats and their legs!

Agreed. Plus hitting into 18 less DP’s helps. That right there could potentially be at least 18 less runs depending on the situation, maybe more. So about half the difference. It’s a lot of luck on the Cubs part and probably a little bad luck on our part.

With Willy in the two hole that figures. And the IBB to get to him. Maybe noot will get better pitches to hit now that Willy is gearing up.

How do Cubs avoid the DP, by stealing second and taking the DP away, right.

That’s incredible. There for the steal eliminates the DP. Not only does it put runner in scoring position it eliminates the DP, and messes with the pitcher.

Genius.

CCard wrote: 29 Apr 2025 07:28 am Simple. When your offense can't sustain the run production needed and your pitching isn't strong enough to hold the other team down, then you're going to wind up way down in the standings. This is going to get ugly. I hope I'm wrong but right now that look like a last place team. A team dependent on batted ball luck on both sides of the ball isn't going to be consistent. Failure of ownership is to blame. Those empty seats speak volumes.
Wait a minute. We were all just told that this is a top 10 offense. Yeah, with stats inflated by the first nine games.

With Willy in the two hole that figures. And the IBB to get to him. Maybe noot will get better pitches to hit now that Willy is gearing up.

How do Cubs avoid the DP, by stealing second and taking the DP away, right.
Cubs have 179 PAs with a runner on 1st base and have 3 DPs (1.7%). 81 PAs with runner on 1st/2nd and have hit into 4 DPs (4.9%).
Cardinals have 222 PAs with a runner on 1st base and have 17 DPs (7.7%). 85 PAs with runner on 1st/2nd and have hit into 7 DPs (8.2%).
MLB has 5825 PAs with a runner on 1st base and have 348 DPs (6%). 2256 PAs with runners on 1st/2nd and have 125 DPs (5.5%)
Part of that is on the manager we have. He refuses to start runners.

Inability to win on the road...pathetic.
Bingo

We probably only got 2/3 you can start. If the aren’t hitting or walking, can’t run. Whole system has to be in check. Running game is another one.

I don't know that anyone believed that but at the time they were statistically very high up offensively.
