He told me sometimes the manager would tell the umpires prior to a game that he was going to get ejected in an attempt to fire up his team and to let the umpires know it wasn't personal.

I'm not asserting Marmol told the umpires prior to the game but it did look like he got ejected on purpose.

That guy was interesting to talk to. Lots of stories.
The Marmot intentionally got himself tossed so that post-game questions would be about that, the umpire, and the pitch call - and not about his abysmal bullpen management or the 1-10 road record.
Obvious.
If oli wanted to seriously grump about umpiring it would have made far more sense for him to get ejected sunday cuz the calls there were far more egregious and worth confrinting the ump aboht. Instead he decided to randomly choose to get tossed on far less egregious umpiring tonight.

Marmol is ejected. I am dejected that I have to watch his donkey (bleep) be asleep at the wheel during in game decisions time and time again. I am dejected that I have watch his smug grin in the dugout for more games. I am dejected that I have to watch his faux leadership for more games. Worst Cardinal manager in my Cardinal viewing history(1982).

It was not about the ump.
Ot the pitch call.
It was about The Marmot wanting his ejection and his feigned outrage to generate post-game questions rather than yet again being questioned for his poor BP management and the 1-10 road record.
Pure theatre.
Zero to do with the ump.

I agree....frustration at his end.
He needs to get ejected earlier next time to benefit the team!

On a close team maybe a young team you draw game face from your elderly leader being so disrespected as to be ejected. Selected. I wanna be elected- Alice.

So it seems to work for those teams. A not close team, young manager, maybe the affects aren’t the same.

But in this case, oli didn’t really engage the umpire, just walked to the mound yapping, then got tossed.

Yes but there is measurable proof. Ejections don't do anything. Teams don't suddenly overcome and pull out a victory because theanager threw a tantrum

I think at times it provides a change of attitude. Then maybe things happen. Not much more.
