Was he not on the equivalent of a one year contract last season?

No. He was in the last season of a multi-year contract.

Now that he's experienced an season that set his value nowhere close to the last year of his Cards contract, it could be he's hellbent on producing the entire season to get another contract or better contract for next year.

I think they also both just needed at least one of the two of them to perform, which would have helped the other perform, just cause it works that way. The chemistry wasn't optimal. I wanted the Cardinals to sign Goldschmidt to a 2-3 year extension, and, although I understand why they didn't, I feel it's a shame a great player like him won't get to retire a Cardinal.
