Honestly, Mikolas aside, the pitching has been okay. Not great by any means, but okay.
Fedde/Graceffo pooped the bed in Boston and Fernandez isn't on track yet. Other than that things are positive.
Mikolas should be DFA'd and McGreevey should be given the opportunity to show what he has at the MLB level.
The good news is it looks like there are some AAA options that can that step up.
We could see notable pitching changes within a week or two.
I've asked before, who? Who can fill the pen and the starting rotation?
Crickets...
Well for one, McGreevy in the rotation.
A rotation of:
Gray
Fedde
Pallante
McGreevy
Liberatore
Looks like a pretty solid rotation.
For a 4th place team maybe.

I am curious. It seems to me (I know short sample so far) that the new hitting coach and approach is making a large difference. Is a new pitching coach an answer or is it lack of high end talent?

I think McG should be here soon. As for the Mik, that’s 17miks.

IF, if they fall 10 games behind the scrubbies (who look like the best of the NLC), then it's time to:
-DFA Mikolas

If they are in 3rd place and 10 games out of the division and more than 3 out of a wildcard it is time to do the painful "rebuild" they refuse to say out loud.
Do their best to deal Fedde (major loss in value now), Helsley (some loss in value), Nado (maybe actually some gain in value), Mikolas (salary relief or DFA), Matz (increased value), Maton (good sign for a flip). Add as many prospects to the farm as possible. Doesn't matter if the Cards really suck in the last part of the season. last place is no worse than 3rd place. If you miss the playoffs or even squeak in with a lame no chance team it's all the same.
I will always believe they missed the boat not dealing Fedde and Helsley in December. They both would have returned a quality prospect. Now not so sure. Some of the others are just to wipe the slate and open playing time.
The next 8 games are telling. If they don't go on a tear it's time to face the music. Like pulling a bandaid off a scab. Do it quick and take the hurt but get it over with.

AT the time of that post (4/7) I didn't think the Cards would have a prayer at a WC spot, who knew the Braves & DBacks would implode?
So I figured their only playoff shot was the NLC.
But, surprise they're still actually very much alive in the WC hunt w/the Padres and Giants (who we know will ADD).
The only one I don't deal you mentioned is Maton, I want him given a new deal at the ASB (1 or 2 yrs but low money under $3M AAV).
Mo really missed the boat on Fedde, he has little value now.
Helsley will still command a solid return, arms like his will be in HUGE demand.
The next four series after the Scrubs vs beatable teams will tell the direction.

Agree on all of that. But I don't think Maton will accept the deal you describe. I think if he continues at this pace he could be in line for a higher AAV deal.

And someone would most likely give him a Kittridge type deal, that's why I'd approach him at the ASB and hope he'd be willing to sign instead of risking injury or a bad second half.
Surprisingly he's only topped $3M once in his career ($3.4M).
I'd go $6M/2 yrs at the ASB if C. Bloom wants to keep him.
