https://blogs.fangraphs.com/strike-thre ... -accuracy/

The article opines that while the accuracy of human umpires to call a strike accurately has gotten better over the decade, it has plateaued at 85% accuracy.

Accuracy less if the ball is on the edge of the plate plateaus around 80% accuracy. Not surprising.

Human umpires are better at calling balls than strikes.
Well yeah, the ball area is infinite. The strike zone, not so much.

You got a single. Calm down.
I dont mind it. It shows they are having fun and comradery within the team thats a good thing in my opinion
I'm okay with the half jesture, meaning put your arms up and do a little double wing flap with your wrist and hands, but when they do that full-arm-extended wiiiiiinnng uuuuuppp and then wiiiiiiiiing doooooooooown wave ... dangit what happened to the vomit emoji.

It’s just a little much, and unwarranted.

I prefer the bird-in-flight compared to the pepper grinder and salsa eating.

We want them to be robots. Except when we don't want them to be robots.

Every team does some weird gesture. If it brings the team together and they're having fun, who cares.

This is ignorant. The umps need to focus on their job. Then there may be reduction of criticism.

DeWitt could use bird-in- flight as marketing tool.
Have it sponsored by Delta Airlines,..
commercial: We (Delta) love to see Cardinals taking flight successfully in 2025. Last year they mostly flew into our engines !

"Cardinal players warned about touching their helmet (ABS)."

And this is the end all, paramount, critical, end of the universe, etc issue facing MLB? Looking like Nurse Ratchet is the face are striving for the fans to see?

Well they did solve the need for ghost runner, pitch clock, and above all lack of pizza size bases.

Banner29 wrote: 02 Apr 2025 11:50 am Is there a more insufferable group of umps/refs in professional sports than in the MLB? I don’t really follow the NBA but have heard that their group has been pretty awful especially this year but MLB umps are, imo, by far the worst. Just a bunch of insecure, over sensitive, attention seeking bunch of dill holes I have seen anywhere
I appreciate your opinion but could not disagree more. Players and managers act like petulant children all the time, call the umpire every name in the book (even when the ump proves to be correct), and umpires are expected just to sit there and take it. When the umpire says or does anything someone calls it the 'ump show.' Why is it okay for Earl Weaver to act like a child but not okay for the ump to react? I have been involved in junior high and high school sports for many years, and the officials are about the best people you could ever meet; good natured despite all the abuse they take.

As to this rule, players know exactly what they are doing. You are an adult, control your reactions even if you don't like the call. On a baseball field, umpires are the authority. A massive component of societal breakdown is a result of the rejection of legitimate authority. Don't get mad at the little leaguer who shows up the ump, if his favorite player does it.

I anticipate getting a mountain of (bleep) for this opinion, but I stand by it. Yes, there are juvenile umps, but there are far more juvenile players and managers.

Last point, ABS should be in the big leagues next year. The system is fantastic.

This is interesting: #stlcards players were told if they touch their helmet to sarcastically suggest they’re challenging a pitch call as they did in spring with ABS …

That will get them ejected, immediately.

No warning. Just out
So is this what VSIII (I believe it was him) was doing the other day when he kept his hands on both sides of his helmet after hitting a HR? I had no clue what he was doing or why he was doing it. Seemed odd, albeit deserved. I'd like to try and track down how many missed balls and strikes the umps manufactured against us the last 2 seasons.

It's also changing the subject to get attention.

Moving on . . .

This stupid rule change is brought to you by a group who feels the need to make new rule changes every year. In their mind it's their charter towards "continual improvement." One sees this in corporate America (I'd be surprised if there aren't a handful of Dilbert comic strips parodying this activity. We have to change SOMETHING or we're not contintually improving, so to continually improve we have to change something!

My wife just threw her two cents worth in. She asked why players gabbing their crotch area is not a violation. I told her they are repositioning their ‘cup’ in jockstrap. She replied ‘ I think doing that should result in immediate ejaculation by the umpire.
Honey, I think you meant
Ejection’. Ooops
