As I said to my wife as it unfolded and after posted on another thread, having Contreras bunt in the ninth was just stupid. For sure it took the bat out of Nando’s hand. So, then you had Baker and Pages to deliver in the clutch. Neither has a history of doing that. I know Contreras is 0 for the season, but I’d trust him to get the timely hit over Baker and Pages.

This was one of the 62 games that can swing either way depending on the effectiveness and know how of the manager and key situational performances by your supposed core players.
In my opinion we are now 50-51. Thanks lil' Napoleon.

Subbing in Pages in the 7th inning was dumb. I really hope that's not a theme this year because we can use Contreras as an emergency catcher. Maybe sub him in in the 9th inning if you have a slim lead, but I still don't like it. Herrera hits. He isn't that bad defensively. Keep him in the game, especially when he's hitting 5th in the lineup.

What was the intent of this move- strategy? Bring in better defensive catcher, better stick, rest for Herrera, what. That’s the issue. What strategy did it satisfy.

I'm assuming that in Oli's mind it was for better defense. But, you don't substitute your 5th hitter that early in a close ballgame to play for marginally better defense. Also, you can't go the whole season subbing out your catcher for defense in the bottom 3rd innings all the time. Similarly, you can't go all season moving your CF to RF late in the game. These moves have negative impacts on your young starters and could hinder development. Show them you believe in them every once and a while.

I believe it was because of Herrera losing track of strikes and letting the runner go to second because of his mental mistake.

Good write. It also plays of still playing players to make everybody happy. If you make an outfield replacement late, and catcher, same game, you basically get every position player in the game. Suddenly everybody’s happy? Or are they.

Amen Ronnie. Herrera bat shouldn’t leave the order
Oli tinkers wrongly most times

Nobody thinks Oli is a competent manager. He is a puppet. Mo has never hired a manager with even a day of major league experience.
+1
Strategic thinking is foreign to Oli.
(And why was NADO ten feet off the line in the 7th inning when you're guarding a one run lead?

)

The biggest mistake was Baker batting 3rd. He's not a MLB player. Totally froze in a big spot. I don't blame Marmol. He doesn't make the lineup. Just hands it in.
I too found that to be a big moment. Baker looked overmatched for sure in a critical situation.
And what was up with Donovan throwing home in the 10th? That also cost the Cardinals any real chance of winning.

This may have been the reason. Of all positions the catcher should know the count. It was just one of those games, they needed one key hit and couldn't get it.

Monday morning quarterbacking and a huge over reacting to a 3 game begining, and the expected, equally over reacting to a first loss. Typical CT.
Over reacting to the negative and the positive of small sample sizes. Critique of minutia to fit the bias.
It's like posters don't recognize it's the 4th game of a 162 game season. Marathon, not a sprint.

The scoreboard had the count wrong. The pitcher also thought it was K3 if you noticed. Herrera should still know the count, but he wasn't the only one.
