I agree. I'm not sure what the plan is for Mathews. Are the Cardinals being to restrictive with him? He's not exactly a youngster, so to speak. It looks to me like he is simply blocked, right now, by some bloated contracts.
Seriously???
Mathews is flipping 24 years old!
He has been on the rise and there is a strong chance he is the rotation late in the season!
In the meantime you have:
Gray
Fedde
Pallante
Mikolas
Matz
To be followed by:
McGreevy
Graceffo?
Roby??
It took you three edits to post these pearls of wisdom???
His work load in the minors will continue to groom him as a starter.
My guess?
He is a regular in the rotation coming out of ST next season.
Yes by all means one more start with the big club in ST is the KEY!
My fingers are crossed that he doesn’t turn into a pumpkin by June.
SMH.....more classic stuff!!!

There’s no reason to. They need to use those starts for guys competing for major league jobs.
Shelby Miller got 2 ST outings coming off of 2 starts in A ball.
Quinn Mathews got 1 ST start when he’s a on the verge of the MLB.

I’m just saying I feel like a pitcher who is on the cusp of the MLB would get a longer look than 1 start. At least I feel like I’m the past they would. Especially when we have [shirt]ty pitchers like Mikolas and Matz. Starters are only going 3 innings at this point, lots of innings to still be covered. Mathews could come in after Mikolas or Matz and put his 3 innings in.

He had one decent start in AAA. It’s reasonable to want to see some success there before putting him in the major league rotation.
Who are you putting him in front of, Pallante or McGreevy?
Who said I put him in front of either?

It seems obvious that the Cardinals are going to try to get something out of the Mikolas' and Matz's bloated contracts first. Before talented pitchers in the the organization like Mathews and Roby get their chance.

You think they Side Show Clown stole Shady's password?
Mathews needs to start every 5th day right now (March 2) and the place that is available is in minor league camp.

7 others sent to Minor League camp
per TCN article:
The team optioned left-handed pitcher Bailey Horn to the Memphis (AAA) roster, and re-assigned non-roster pitchers Ian Bedell, Alex Cornwell, Cooper Hjerpe, Quinn Mathews and Edwin Nuñez and catchers Sammy Hernandez and Carlos Linárez to minor league camp.

Whoever this “Shady” poster is all he does is ask rhetorical questions while offering nothing in a discussion.
Seeks attention only!
That being said:
Mathews has probably risen to become their #1 SP prospect edging slightly ahead of McGreevy & Hence.
He needs to start the season in AAA and keep progressing.
There is NO WAY he should start the season in St.Louis so WHY push him?
Especially when you need to evaluate the other arms who could/should start the season with the big club.
But by all means we need to see Mathews throw 5 or 6 more innings so CT posters can get a better look at him!
SMH LOL

I mean 24 I’d usually around the cut off age for most teams.
If a guy hasn’t made it by then, he’s probably not going too.
