In context as we kicked the can on this rather slight dispute, I happened upon this wiki page :

The 30 Years' War, which fairly depopulated central Europe, only comes in 13th place. It's staggering to see how much death & destruction has been wrought by war/invasion in human history, esp. including Asia. One other thing that jumps out is we often heard repeated, that the scale of destruction in the 20th century was unprecedented. It was in extent, esp. when combining the World Wars, but there were plenty of 10-30 million catastrophes in the centuries before, carried out with the weapons of antiquity.

Do you think when Luther nailed his Theses to the Church door, he anticipated the carnage his gently suggested social rearrangement would inspire ? When the apple cart is upset (define it how you like), the casualty count can observably run obscenely high.
