We are there, I believe the max is 20.8Pierre McGuire wrote: ↑05 Jul 2026 11:13 am We are on the verge of the $20 mil dollar player.
Gonna be interesting to see how aggressive the Islanders are towards Schaefer a year from now.
I really would have liked to see the Blues make a run at Fantilli and see if they could have structured it in a way that might give Columbus pause and then maybe you work out a deal involving Dvo plus but I guess that ship has sailed now.

This. But the damage is done, now. Its gonna be hard to get any hometown discounts after this. Verbeek has been exposed as out of touch. And their centerpiece can still walk in 5 years. Not much of a window.
And if they dont match, theyre likely where PHI is *now*, lacking a 1C and too competitive to wind up with another top 3 pick any time soon - wven with the draft capital influx.
Maybe they'll pay a kings ransom for MM back? Lol.

I don't put much stock in what reporters say about ongoing contract negotiations. I expect the Ducks will match. If the owners are unhappy they can fire the GM. Kudos to Philly for forcing the issue.

For those who would like to see what four 1st rounders could net you for not matching on Carlsson.

Ducks could put an offer sheet in on Fantilli for $16 mil (save $2mil per year), let Philly have Leo and ship the 4 draft picks to Columbus. Everyone expected the Ducks to go with Fantilli a few years ago anyways. I'm being facetious here, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do, and Columbus is about to have to start a rebuild anyways, no?

Could you imagine that black-eye for poor Columbus?Sophisticated Shoes wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 18:23 pm Ducks could put an offer sheet in on Fantilli for $16 mil (save $2mil per year), let Philly have Leo and ship the 4 draft picks to Columbus. They suffer through losing seasons and land players like Werenski & Fantilli. They start making moves to get out of doormat status by signing Gaudreau and later Monahan. Suddenly, tragedy strikes and they lose Gaudreau. Then Werenski wins Good and starts looking for greener pastures with some of his USNT chums… then here comes an offer sheet war to blow up Fantilli’s salary? Yikes.

My understanding is that anaheim has to ise it's own firsts and cannot use philly's (if they do not match).Sophisticated Shoes wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 18:23 pm Ducks could put an offer sheet in on Fantilli for $16 mil (save $2mil per year), let Philly have Leo and ship the 4 draft picks to Columbus. I believe you are correct. But It doesn't matter, because likely the mentioned teams could probably be about the same in the standings and then you have that pesky little lottery thing to twist the odds of whom gets to go when picking that top elite. In this case, Philly just has to be absolutely correct, because they would be the ones out of the First Round for many years...see how that worked for the Blues in the 1990s...I know, different times and rules and League/Arbitrator getting involved back then.IsDurbanodoingtime wrote: ↑07 Jul 2026 06:41 amMy understanding is that anaheim has to ise it's own firsts and cannot use philly's (if they do not match).Sophisticated Shoes wrote: ↑06 Jul 2026 18:23 pm Ducks could put an offer sheet in on Fantilli for $16 mil (save $2mil per year), let Philly have Leo and ship the 4 draft picks to Columbus. But if all of that took place, then yes poor Columbus. Again, John Davidson...

Re: Leo Carlsson Offer Sheet
For a case study example: Edmonton Oilers.skilles wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 18:33 pm I'm not sure people quite understand the players get 50% of the revenue NO MATTER WHAT. Its not optional or maybe, the GMs/owners might decide which players get more of it than other but the owners spend exactly half of the NHL revenue on players period.
Ive been saying for awhile we are about to enter A time where they have more money to spend than they can find good places to spend it. The Blues have actually been doing that for awhile on various project players. The market has needed a correction for a couple years now.
I don't think ALL young players should be quite as happy about this as people think, I'm not sure Flyers players should be licking their chops as much as being concerned their is not enough money left for them. Paying top line players huge amounts of money is not necessarily great for ole 3rd line Joe.
A team only has 104 million to spend, 20 million on top line Jack probably means less for ole 3rd line Joe.
If you are on A team with Carlsson and want to stay on that team he didn't just raise the payroll potential, the payroll potential is a set number. He just took a bigger share leaving less for everyone else not more.

Absolutely with a decision like this the owners are in the loop! And quite possibly they may have even been the ones to initiate a "go big" strategy with whomever he thinks is best to pursue? (There is history between these two teams -- Gauthier, Zebras...)STL fan in MN wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 17:20 pmI’d say Verbeek is many times more likely to get fired than win GM of the year.dhsux wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 14:51 pmArmy's Mom wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 12:42 pmGuarantee ownership is thrilled. He took a team with a ton of tallent on the wings and brought in a world class young center. If this works the Flyers are a beast. Yes, he overpaid. Everyone does with an offer sheet. Risk reward for Briere made this a bold and brilliant move.billybaseball wrote: ↑04 Jul 2026 08:07 am Everything about this is dumb. Verbeek is dumb for playing hardball with the future of the franchise. Flyers are dumb for offering this contract as it's almost double what Carlson should get. And the Ducks would be dumb to match. And Carlson is dumb for taking it tbh. Now he has to live up to the contract which is impossible. If he goes to Philly and isn't the best player in the NHL he's going to get ripped apart. And now Martone is goi g to want a max contract in two years. DUMB
As I see it this offer is way over the past normal top in AAV and term.
Briere is the early leader for GM of the year. Baller move.
How in the world are owners "thrilled" paying more for less? No matter what the cap level is. I must have missed it in econ 1.
And what of the franchises who do not spend to the cap? How thrilled are they?
I'll lay some money on that GM of the year award you claim coming his way. I'd put the same odds on Verbeek winning it.
The Philly owners are clearly on board here. No way a move this big isn’t made without ownership buy-in. And Army’s Mom is correct - they’re going to spend about the same amount either way. And if they spend more with a roster that includes Carlsson than a roster that doesn’t, but that roster is better and thus it results in more tickets sold and/or more home playoff games, then it’ll pay for itself and then some pretty easily.
And owners keep 50% of revenues no matter what. Even if ANA matches, the Philly GM and ownership can probably walk around town as heroes as at least they tried to go big.
And for that same logic, the Anaheim owners are in this loop and MAY say to Verbeek...look we appreciate your balanced cost containment strategy of managing contract levels, but go ahead and match this time. We'll let the chips fall where they may.
I don't know, but we'll see.
