I think they made it clear that they plan to get back to being excellent at player development after admitting that this had deteriorated recently. Every offseason move pretty much aligned with that.
They are spending ~$100M this year on Roger Dean stadium upgrades which is where a lot of player development happens. Because of this they are not spending on MLB free agents in 2025.
They also made it clear that they plan to try to compete this season (and every season) and do not plan to tank & rebuild. They said tanking is not a Cardinal thing to do. Weird that the media expected them to tank when they said they would not.
They did try to trade Arenado (to save more money) which they thought they could do without hurting 2025-27 too badly since they have Donovan and Duncan and Saggese to replace him and soon Wetherholt. They don't have obvious replacements for Gray or Contreras. They would not have gotten serious prospects for Arenado so this trade was not part of a rebuild, it would have been a money saver.
They could have traded Mikolas/Matz but they didn't feel like they had a lot of pitching depth (and they don't). These trades again would have been to save money and not prospects so the trades would not have been part of a rebuild either.
Excellent post, statman. Much appreciated.

It’s also interesting to go position by position to see where we’re set for a few years, with certain players under control for at least 3 seasons. See how many holes we need to fill from the outside.

Does any of that seem like the people running this org have any clue with they’re doing?
Why should a minor league facility upgrade impact the ML club budget….
Gray was just signed then that offseason you approach him about being traded after giving a NTC
Same with Contreras the year before as they signed him to replace Yadi at C…..how do you not know he’s not good at C???
They tried to trade NA and couldn’t get it done
Nobody wants Miles and Matz
If it were up to this FO all those vets would be gone saving BDW millions so obviously they didn’t want to compete…..Remember, ALL the YUTES will play
This is a disorganized rudderless ship

This thread is pointless. There's clearly no attendance problem. This was taken 5 min ago. I'm sure there's a metrolink carrying about 20,000 people showing up any minute.

This is all well and good, but it doesn’t address the accountability problem — it doesn’t allow for any consequence for allowing it to get to this point.

Well, it's what a disinterested owner with an incompetent front office looks like. At least in THIS case. Certainly losing will eventually look like that too.

I said last year that the stadium would be empty in ‘25 …….I didn’t really imagine this empty…..
BDW has lost Cardinals nation.
A guaranteed cash cow.
Amazing
