Does Cardinals 5th pick Sunday boil down to this ? a HS shortstop vs. a college pitcher ?
It seems that college SS Arquette and HS pitcher Hernandez are the only two that could make the choice vary from that .

Could be, unless they decide to take an under slot deal like with Irish or Witherspoon maybe? Would love to be a fly on the wall in the Cardinals scout department right now lol

Here's a nice little draft primer from Kareem, who I really like to follow on Twitter for info on Cardinal prospects and draft stuff. Not much that we really haven't talked about here, but he always adds some nice details in his discussion of players. He covers two of the top guys (Holliday, Anderson) who are unlikely to fall to us, a couple of the underslot guys (Irish, Witherspoon, Parker) if the Cardinals wanted to go that route, and then the two most likely guys (Willits, Arnold) that we will draft.
Spoiler alert, he likes Arnold.

Arnold, if available, seems like the safest realistic option at 5 that will bring value to the major league roster at some point.
Doubt he'll ever be anything more than a #2-3 type starter, but in this draft I think I'm selecting him if I'm the cards.

I certainly couldn't argue with the pick. Like you said, he seems like a pretty safe opinion, even if he might not be that ace. And with the Cardinals current homegrown pitching problems he has a chance to make an impact with the team very quickly. You would think that would play a role in their thought process.

The Athletic released a mock by Keith Law this morning, but it looked exactly like Keith Law's mock with NYT from yesterday. Same company. So I didn't paste it on here
I expect Callis and Mayo to release a final one late tonight, early tomorrow. BA will likely release a final one sometime tomorrow

Just read an article on Bleacher Report saying the Nationals could be eyeing Willits with the #1 pick. That would be interesting.

Holliday, Anderson, Willits are the talked about targets of the Nats. Willits would be a surprise, and would probably cost the Nats less money.

They may not even get a chance at one of the top college pitchers. I think there's a very high probability that the top 4 picks are Anderson, Doyle, Arnold, and Holliday.
Re: 2025 MLB Draft Room ~ Thread, Mocks, Discussion, Draft Boards
that latest mock Duce referenced has Seth Hernandez going 2nd to the Angels.
what ???????????
everything I've read has said Angels like to take college guys who can graduate to the bigs very quickly.
also in that mock, Jamie Arnold last til #10
what ??????????????????????????????????????

anything can happen on draft day...the Royals took a #45 rank player in the Top 10 a few years back....but I think this mock is a bit goofy and out there.....but again, it could happen. This years draft is so bleh up top.82birds wrote: ↑12 Jul 2025 13:36 pm that latest mock Duce referenced has Seth Hernandez going 2nd to the Angels.

Bro, I did not know Willits hit .600 with 10hr this spring. Holy (bleep). Why do scouts project him with little power? That changes my whole outlook on him. I haven’t been able to find any stats on him from this spring.rage-STL wrote: ↑12 Jul 2025 08:07 amBoth are valid viewpoints. The draft rarely offers "slam dunks" so I'm really interested to see how this goes down tomorrow. Just for some added context when comparing JJ and Willits; below are their Perfect Game prospect profiles from their draft year. It's not saying 1 player is better/has a higher ceiling than the other, I just find it interesting. Also, it's pretty crazy how young Willits is, playing up and being considered a sure fire top 10 pick.Tahoe41 wrote: ↑11 Jul 2025 12:07 pmI see it the opposite, I view him as a poor version of Wetherholt. The only knock on him is his power but he is only 17 and at 6’1 is going to grow more and get stronger. His bat to ball skill is great. Think of him as a possible bigger and stronger version of Wetherholt.peterman'srealitytour wrote: ↑11 Jul 2025 11:16 amBased on what? a few more dropped this morning

CBS has the M's taking Irish @ #3 .... I can see that happening. Wide open draft

Be prepared for the possibility of a very wonky draft... see 2021....all those highly rated HS SS started falling on draft day, College players and catchers leapt to the top of the draft.

At 17 and 6'1", 180 lbs, there's room for growth and strength improvement, too. I'd rather Hernandez be the choice. But I'd be fine with Willits upside, too.Jobafish wrote: ↑12 Jul 2025 14:44 pmBro, I did not know Willits hit .600 with 10hr this spring. Holy (bleep). Why do scouts project him with little power? Agree. Ive never been a fan of drafting a HS pitcher. Take the guy who is closest to making the jump. A solid 2/3 would be a win.
Re: 2025 MLB Draft Room ~ Thread, Mocks, Discussion, Draft Boards
I think it's Willits or Parker at #5. Too bad they won't keep Hernandez on their board.
A minor miracle for Holliday, Anderson or Arnold to fall. Holliday's contract demand could do it.
I'm just saying no to Doyle at #5. It won't be Arquette either. But maybe one of those get taken in the first 4 picks. Hernandez also?
Yes, anything can happen.
