They need to develop two young, cost controlled, front of rotation SPs and that probably doesn't happen until late 2027 or 2028.

Expecting them to be rebuilt by 2027 was always likely to be expecting too much.

Houston didn't.

After being 9th in payroll in 2009, they dropped off to 20th in 2011 (55-107), 27th in 2012 (55-107), 30th in 2013 (51-111), 29th in 2014 (70-92), and 27th in 2015 (86-76), before raising spending again and going on a run of success in 2017 on.

Atlanta didn't.

After being 13th in payroll in 2014, they dropped off to 22nd in 2015 (67-95), 19th in 2016 (68-93), 19th in 2017 (72-90), and 20th in 2018 (90-72), before raising spending again and going on a run of success from 2018 on.

Philadelphia didn't.

After being 3rd in payroll in 2014, they dropped off to 18th in 2016 (71-91), 21st in 2017 (66-96), and 23rd in 2018 (80-82), before raising spending again and making the playoffs from 2022-2025.

If teams with typically more resources than the Cardinals see the advantage of dialing back MLB payroll spending while rebuilding the organization, the Cardinals should too.

How old is that? I knew bowden was dumb and pretty worthless to listen to but if he said that after the stretch the cardinals have then hes getting more dumb as he gets older

Replace Libby in the rotation

Those aren’t world beating numbers.

And I don’t know how you can look at the Cardinals roster right now and truly think they could be a contender.

For once in a long time, the Cards have a GM/POBO who only wants to build a team that can win the World Series. Not "make the playoffs and hope."
To do that, you need to find players who can be elite at their positions, not mediocre. The players listed as trade bait are, at best, mediocre (Herrera because of his lack of defense and base running).

Chaim Plan = Keep 1) trading for high-ceiling (high-risk) players like Jesus Baez, Peete, Cijntje, Fajardo, Clarke, Molina, et al., 2) developing Rainiel, The Baez Bros., et al., and 3) drafting similar players. They need superstars, and that only comes with a GM who isn't satisfied with lesser players.
