The Mariners took high school hitters in the first round for three Drafts in a row, ending with Colt Emerson in 2023. They also took three straight prep bats that year, following Emerson with Jonny Farmelo and then Peete, all taken in the Top 30 picks. Peete signed for a little under slot, $2.5 million, and the former Georgia two-way standout split his brief pro debut between the Arizona Complex League and full-season Modesto as he focused on hitting only. He spent his first full season back with Modesto and showed flashes of the tools that made him a top prospect, but also inconsistencies that need to be addressed.

A premium athlete with a wide receiver's 6-foot-2 frame, Peete has a left-handed swing geared to do damage at the plate. He has immense raw power and showed flashes of it in 2024, with an approach that could let him crush balls to all fields. But he just as easily can get out of that approach when he tries to sell out for power, and while he does draw some walks, the 30.7 percent strikeout rate he registered last year isn't going to work as he moves up the ladder. He doesn't have great rhythm and feel at the plate and could be an ambush power-over-hit type of offensive player.

Peete uses his speed well on the basepaths, and he finished second in the California League with his 45 steals. He's seen time at shortstop, third base and in the outfield, and he might fit best in center long-term, as the game can speed up on him on the dirt.

Mechangelo Cijntje was a right-handed pitcher who played professionally in the Netherlands. Son Jurrangelo, a natural lefty, wanted to copy his dad and liked wearing his glove, so he learned to throw with his other hand as well. His switch-pitching made news with Curacao’s 2016 Little League World Series team and he kept on doing it as he headed to Mississippi State for college rather than entertain any mid-round offers out of high school. He was one of the best Draft-eligible sophomores in the 2024 class, and when the Mariners took him 15th overall, it marked the first time they went college arm with their first selection since 2020, when Emerson Hancock was the last of three straight pitchers taken from the university ranks.

The Mariners plan to let Cijntje continue to pitch with both arms and see what it looks like at the pro level. There’s general consensus that he’s better right-handed, with a chance to start in the mold of Marcus Stroman. He can crank his fastball up to 98 mph with carry up in the zone, complementing it with an effective mid-80s slider that touches 90-91 mph with depth and a firm fading changeup. As a lefty, he’s more reliever-ish, using a lower slot to get outs with a sweeping low-80s breaker and a low-90s fastball.

Though he’s undersized and that will always bring concerns about durability with it, he’s strong and athletic and showed an increased ability to find the strike zone in his second season in college. Whether he eventually throws right-handed full time as a starter or is able to find a way to use his ambidextrousness to his advantage as he climbs the ladder will be one of the more interesting storylines in the Mariners system.

That's the trouble. We were supposed to hold onto our best trade chip (or bundle him with Jojo or surpluss catchers etc) to get as close to a sure thing as posslble. This is the opposite of that.

It seems Williamson is the best piece so there has to be more to all of this

162 K's last year...batted .217. He's young....but when there's a 4:1 disparity in K/BB....yikes. Maybe he'll get better
