Happy new year! On 1/1, it feels like a good day to look back at the first owner in Cardinals franchise history – Chris Von der Ahe, the George Steinbrenner of his era.

Though rumors emerged that Alexander was still drunk from celebrating his Game 6 victory, numerous teammates swore that Alexander was stone-cold sober as he saved the day:

One of my favorite trivia questions: "when was the only time an epileptic pitcher faced an epileptic batter?"
A. GCA faced Tony Lazzeri in that World Series.

In the movie, starring Ronald Reagan as "Pete" Alexander, they portrayed it as a mysterious disease causing him to have fainting spells, etc., struggling to keep it together. In truth, Alexander suffered from epilepsy and partial hearing loss caused by exposure to mustard gas and an exploding shell during WWI. Reagan was mad they didn't portray his condition truthfully. However, he was also a raging alcoholic (died from it), so it may have been DTs - or delirium tremors, although his teammates swore he was cold sober "that day." To be allegedly sober "that day" doesn't mean he didn't have DTs. We'll never know.
