Re: While more successful coaches get fired after winning playoff games, Oli remains
I don't see why this is complicated for some.
It doesn't matter what you think of Oli. This is not a desirable job. If you fire him, they are going to have to bring in either a manager with no track record or either one with a bad track record, and they will lose the same amount of games regardless.
I would actually give Oli a two year extension, that way he isn't making playing time decisions trying to save his job, and he is focus on giving time to they players the cardinals need to see develop.
Then at the end of the contract, and hopefully as the cardinals look more like a young talent team ready to compete. The Manager job for the Cardinals is a higher sought after destination, they can decide if Oli is the guy to compete with or if they need to add someone else

Well said ! Good post ! Very few discuss that a 'new' manager is seeking to 'win now' . His best chances of getting more 'W's in the win column is playing more experienced veteran players but the GM is not seeking those on the roster. . So the two would have a clash most likely.rbc1 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 07:04 am I don't see why this is complicated for some.

The only question about Marmol is whether the Cardinals trust him, along with the other improvements they have presumably made to the player development system, to develop the next core of young talent over the next 2 or 3 years.
Right now it's not about winning, it's about player development.

Re: While more successful coaches get fired after winning playoff games, Oli remains
agree.....another similarity
the stros went through their..."if we just get this guy, if we just get that guy" period under Drayton....of course it failed
finally Crane gave Luhnow the freedom to blow it up....
I like what bloom is doing.....build the roster, build the organization...the quality manager will follow

So it wasn't a "desirable" job when Arenado and Goldschmidt were vying for MVP honors and the team was supposedly built to make a run?rbc1 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 07:04 am I don't see why this is complicated for some.

Re: While more successful coaches get fired after winning playoff games, Oli remains
After the 2025 MLB season, several managers were let go or departed, including Bob Melvin (Giants), Rocco Baldelli (Twins), Bruce Bochy (Rangers, mutual), Ron Washington/Ray Montgomery (Angels), and Brian Snitker (Braves, advisory role), following mid-season dismissals for Bud Black (Rockies) and Dave Martinez (Nationals), with Mike Shildt (Padres) surprisingly retiring, marking a busy managerial carousel for the 2025-26 offseason.

Oli is a minor league Manager
Better suited developing young players
Way over his head managing major league players.

Bloom has a lot on his plate in his first season between building the roster and the farm system.
Manager might be down on the list?
And while I think Oli is mediocre it’s not like he will be the difference in 2026 between contending or not.

Sure it was, and I complained then they didn't go after a bigger name, but that was 4 years ago, under a different front office. It has nothing to do with what we are talking about going forward.11WSChamps wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 07:48 amSo it wasn't a "desirable" job when Arenado and Goldschmidt were vying for MVP honors and the team was supposedly built to make a run?rbc1 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 07:04 am I don't see why this is complicated for some.

Just here long enough to potentially be the fall guy for 2026 and so Dewitt doesn't have to pay his buyout and hire another manager. Dewitt isn't going to spend money until after the lockout. We're just going to have to ride this season out.

Oli is cheap and deflects a little blame from DeWitt. A real manager would command more $ and power.

So just when is the right time to establish a culture of winning and accountability?rbc1 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2026 09:38 amSure it was, and I complained then they didn't go after a bigger name, but that was 4 years ago, under a different front office. Sounds like you're trying to argue both sides.
You don't have to have all the right pieces to establish that foundation of which under this manager we have none.
